Hi. I'm having a bit of a problem with my freelander it's a 1.8 se 2004.

I've owned it for around 2 months now and have done quite a bit of work on her inc vcu and a full service. I'm having an issue pulling away in 1st and reverse gear. It judders in either gear from a standstill it's as if I'm not giving it enough revs. This doesn't happen all the time though (drove it this morning and it was fine) it also doesn't matter whether it's hot or cold when it judders. I've replaced the slave and clutch master cylinder and bracket but this hasn't helped.

I'm wondering whether it's a clutch or fly wheel issue from what I have read on the net

When it was serviced last week it had a code in the ecu showing fault with the crank sensor this was cleared and the mechanic said see how you get on with it as it may be ok. Would a faulty crank sensor effect this or not?

Thanks again

Dave

Clutch judder is quite common on any rover fitted with the PG1 gearbox. It's caused by a lack of lubrication in 3 areas . The operating lever in the box, the gearbox spline and the release bearing slide! The cause simple but the cure is'nt . If the judder have been left for some time then it generally trashes the clutch plate springs, damage the pressure plate friction surface along with the flywleel friction surface and makes the release bearing loose on it's slide. On top of this it will over time damage the gearbox and IRD bearings and the driveshafts. In really bad cases it can soften the engine mounts and suspension bushes as well!!
If you are lucky fitting a new clutch kit paying particular attention to the correct lubrication of all the parts should solve your judder before more expensive damage is caused!!

Perfect. I will print this off and pass it to the garage hopefully this will cure the problem.

How much of a job is it to change the clutch in a 1.8 freelander?

Thanks again
Dave

I took me 10 hours to do the my last 1.8 Fl clutch although this was at home with normal lifting tools.

I used this Kit from Rimmers

Heavy-Duty Clutch Kit - Britpart URB500060 at www.rimmerbros.co.uk

Make sure the bearing slide is greased with a Moly based grease!! I strip, clean and grease the operating lever too. Most fast fit places Don't so the judder will return very fast.

Just an update for everyone I've just had the car back from the garage after having a new clutch kit fitted. The mechanic lubed all the right bits and sorted the gear linkage out which he said was pretty stiff.

He also noticed my rear diff was leaking so he popped a new seal on it too.

It drives completely different now. And is far more enjoyable.
