Heading for France again - how do you find lanes and tracks that are legal to drive in France? I'll be near Aulnay in August and if anybody knows any good, relatively easy lanes around there I would be grateful. I have read that if it doesn't say the lane is private then you're OK but that dosen't seem a particularly great way to proceed. All the maps I've looked at for the area are pretty poor compared with the OS versions for GB. If anybody knows the legal position as well that would be beneficial.
Assuming the old girl gets me there, thanks.

What you've said is about right. They don't have 'green lane' designations like we have, if it's open, ie not locked with a gate and not signed private, then you can presume you are allowed to drive it!

Be aware that many ski pistes are also mountain biking pistes in summer, local rules abound and can be different from mountain/valley to the next!

I have a few maps for France for Memory map, but frankly they don't tell you much, if any, more than the standard Michelin (dogs bollocks for France) maps .. ;)

Thanks for the reply - really apprecite the advice, the AA and RAC route planners have me heading for 17470 Aulnay, just south of Niort. The old girl should be OK to get there (snacks and white wine for the journey), the D2 is fine and the youngest was eating a snail today so we're all set !!

Love that area, we used to regularly stay near Les Sables d'Olonne, and La Rochelle. Didn't do any laning though, other than on the mountain bikes .. ;)
