Ford Galaxy engine?

Hi I'm after a cheap vehicle to run.

I'm thinking of getting a SWB series LR. Id get a tax exempt one. Insurance would be £100/yr ish

I'd like to use it as my main vehicle and id like to get fuel consumption up to 35mpg (or better) I'd put smooth tyres on it.

I'd use it for towing now and again, but only a light caravan.

An engine that wasn't a PITA to fit would be essential.

I'm looking at the 2.0 litre Duratorq engines

Anyone done similar? Any other engines that give fuel economy that drop in fairly painlessly?

You will be pushing it harder in a heavy 4wd. you will only get 26.4 MPG out of a 2.0 mondeo in town driving

You'd be better off sticking to a more conventional conversion like 200/300 Tdi.
The Ford engine will need all the electronic nonsense to make it run, have you checked to see if there's a conversion plate to mate it up to Series gear box.

I think a SWB is about the same weight as the 1.8ton Galaxy? I take your point on the heavier shafts though.

A 2.25 diesel will do ok mpg, say 30 on a run. But they are slow. An lpg converted 2.25 petrol is a good bet. The 300tdi conversion isnt without its headaches so do your homework. They can chew up series boxes but 3.54 diffs and a light right foot helps. Top tip is to drive a series before you buy one as a daily driver, they are agricultural and very basic but thats why we love them so much

My Dad bought an 88" Series 3 that had a 2.3 Peugeot Turbo Diesel Fitted in it by a Diesel Fitter when he replaced the chassis - Going back a few years I know but it was really useable - one thing to note though is that he put a Defender grille and bonnet on it - don't know if he needed the extra space under the hood for ancillaries...
