Well Merry xmas to every one

well last night about 7 ish b 4 the festive cheer started to flow I got a phone call. yep you guest it one of me fair wether freinds had got him self well and trulley stuck in the festive slippy stuff. So off I goes in my trusty old disco mildrid to drag out said freind.

1 hr later freind sucsesfully dragged out of hedge and ditch at side of very snowy road much to his joy.

But on driving home as I rounded the last bend there was a masive bang and the back end of the car shot sideways OH ****. doris cried wot the **** was that. I said bloody car must be stuck in diff lock I'll check when we get home.

So parked the old shed on the drive and jacked up one corner and you guessed it could only turn the wheel a little way before all the slack in the transmission taken up stopped it turning yep diff stuck in lock me finks np out come spanners 13 mm on CDL stud deff disengaged still no joy. so jacked up the front corner as well and made sure there was no wind up. yaaaa diff lock now totally disengaged dropped front corner on drive again just to make sure turned rear wheel and it turns but feels chrunchy!!!

So thought I'd see if the engine would spin it so started engine and yep it turns but sounds like a fookin road drill so I recon the diff is now ****ed well and trulley.

Now I know I can drop the whole gear box out as I have done b4 but I no longer have access to a pit / ramp to do this so it means doing it laid on ma back under the car on me drive. I also know its possible to take out just the transfer box but this also me finks could be very dicy with the weight. so my question is is it possible just to take the front output housing off from the transfer box while its still sat in the car? any tips either way would be of great help cos xmas dinner is cancelled till its fixed !!!!! :frusty:

If the rear diff is fooked, why do you want to take the gearbox out? I would find out what the fault is first. Could be drive shaft, could be interbox drive gears. Check first.

sorry I may have miss represented the fault slightly but its defo the center diff thats broke the diff's in the axels are in a lovely condition and work fine where as the centre diff is all cruchy and sounds like a large bag of nuts and bolts in doris's spin drier !!! lol this is why I was wondering if its possible to split the front output housing that also contains the centre diff off the front of the transfer box while the transfer box is still sat in the car?

i changed my transfer box lying on my back, didn't even bother to jack the motor up.
granted it was heavy but it is possible

Cos I have removed both prop shafts and tried turning both output flanges then I have locked the rear output flange with the handbreak and tried to turn the front flange by hand and its crunchy when turned and when I run the engine with the rear output locked it sounds like a road drill so its deffo the centre diff plus I had one go like this b 4 but in diff circumstances but same symptoms. was wondering if n e one else had sucsessfully tried to just remove the diff housing off the front of the transfer box while its still in the car? or wether to just go for complete transfer case ?

ta for the replies so far

Well me transfer box is laying on the garage floor in lots of bits and yep the pinions in the centre dif have collapesed allowing the planet gears to lock solid so diff is fully locked up so looks like I either need another transfer box or a long list of parts lolol oh well thats all the fun of owning a landy rofl

Just an update on my smashed centre diff if n e one intrested.

As this car is my main and only transport and nowhere seems to be open till next week and I need to earn some more beer tokens this week I have managed to source a complete g/box and t/box from a good m8 he even told me I could have it for free cos the main input gear and input spline from the main box is badly worn.

After 4 hours stripping said box in garage and making one good unit up it looks like I have a servicable t/box to go in my landrover first thing tmo. which should at least see me throught till people feel like going back to work and I can get the bits to rebuild my origanal unit ready to fit when this one either fails or gets noisey or I just find I got some time to swap it out.

N. E. way thanks all to everyone for your help and I'll let you know how I get on.

As for is it possible to split the front output housing from the main transfer box while in the car is yes it is however it is a little bit fiddly to jiggle out but it is a dam sight lighter than the whole t/box or even complete transmission.

Now I have took ton's of photo's so is it worth me trying to do a buster special on this for some one else's benefit in the future I would apreciate your thoughts on this.
