Fitting A Harvey Frost Recovery Crane

Hi Guys,

ive won a harvey frost recovery crane on ebay, has anyone had any experience fitting these and has any tips on it?

get yourself some 8.8 grade m16 studding for a start.
Problem you will find with a coiler(series has straight chassis at back) is the arched chassis rails.
Dont forget to weld in proper supports from the chassis to the floor to take the weight.
Lastly you WILL need spring assisters

i only plan to tow a suzuki sj on it to be honest, i was thinking about cutting holws in the tub and mounting it straight to the chassis?

Listen to Pressbrake. Do it right or dont do it at all. The torsional stresses generated swinging even relatively small weights around at the end of long arms are more than you think. Remember back to your school days during physics lessons and look into forces amplified by leverage

Ok fair enough, do any if you know the laws on using these cranes?

Hope what you are intending to tow is both MOT'd AND road legal for starters

its not, so i have decided against the crane idea, as ive heard frmo a few people that they are now illegal to use at all? im buying a trailer instead

Fitting a crane is a good way to get out of MOTing yer landy though.

Are you 100% positive on that?

We had two 3.5 ton sprinter spec lifts on our fleet and I can't remember them ever having an actual plate test. We get roadworthyness tests done on all of our spec/underlifts because they are a requirement for PAS43 without which many of the larger breakdown clubs won't allow you to do work for them.

I'm gonna have to route through the paperwork for the trucks now cos it's gonna bug me as to why VOSA would only do road worthiness checks on em.
