Hello all,

After the snow cleared I finally managed to get out and see a series 2a that was close to home!

As I am stupidly new to all this I thought I'd ask for some advice - firstly so I can compare this one to others that I may see and secondly I'd prefer to get flamed here than burnt if I buy a dud.......

Here she is - Series 2a - 2 1/4 petrol 55k on the clock asking for £1950 but will bid at £1600

First the pros.
1) Gear box rebuild three years ago
2) Engine rebuild 18 months ago - started from cold first time, no mayo in the filler, minimal smoke on start up (big cough of soot when rev'd but clean after that) bugger all tappet noise (wish my bike was a quiet)
3) Chassis sound as a pound - went over it with a screw driver - outriggers good , no holes , minimal surface rust and looked straight
3) Clean and tidy on the inside - the only mods I can see were two additional water tanks and two additional fuel tanks - fuel tanks were even wired into fuel gauge - so done well.
4) Honest vehicle for it's age - a few knocks , a bit of dirt , broken small window on the rear drivers side.
5) History - ooddles of it - including a log for all but 5k of it's mileage (including two trips to Victoria falls) - it has a past that gives it a bit of soul.
6) Boxes of spare parts - incl a fairy overdrive, two spare wheels, original manuals , various work shop manuals etc

And now for the down side :(

1) Oil leak on rear diff - which accounts for the a) poor braking and hopefully b) the whine when she went above fourty on the road. I think it's an oil seal thats gone - not major unless the diff is buggered...
2) Water tanks are right where I wanted to fit two fold up seats for the kids.
3) Low range box - went in ok but she felt a bit juddery going up a hill in it.
4) Bulk head - in general - sound but passenger side had this

Door was fine - but small hole - hope this is patchable??

As I've only looked at relatively new 90's and 110's , and as rust / bulkhead is a poor combination I'm not sure how bad this is? Must have been there for the last MOT (which I looked at - no advisory notices)

Any thoughts and advice would be welcome!!! (Please?)

Thanks and a happy new year!

Propshaft side oil leak on diff is easy enough to fix but won't explain poor braking, but if the seals are going there may be a hub seal gone which will. All easy enough to fix and the diffs aren't too difficult to change if it's a rover axle.
Low box engages 4wd so it will be juddery on tarmac 'cos there's no centre diff - you should only drive on loose stuff in 4wd or tarmac for short distances.
Repair panels for the bulkhead are reasonably cheap. but it's only bent steel sheet so most parts can be fabricated easily. I think this will need to be sorted for the next MOT as the bulkhead is structural.
You will need some warm clothing (think motorcycle) on really cold days as the heater is crap and there are bound to be a lot of draughts!
It is a bit on the dear side - snow premium?

probably have to agree with Storm  the reason it went through the mot last time is because it was hidden....new paint and what looks like filler  you dont say how long ago the mot was but any tester would fail it if he saw it....for that sort of money you should be looking at a new mot, mechanically sound and tidy

you can see two things in space china's wall and the gaps in a series landrover

its worth bout £900 at the most with that bulkhead and that aint filler its fibreglass where the previous owner had tried sealing out the water from a badly cleaned up rust patch

You see 'new engine' and 'rebuild' a lot in adverts.
Dont beleive it, most of this kind of thing is bull****, only take it as red if you see a receipt for the work.

Dear all,

After reading all your posts I think it's a wrong'un and I shall walk away.....

I did try knocking him down but as he wouldn't budge I think I've made the right decision - the search continues!

Thanks!!!

Yep sounds like the right decision.
No one has any dough at times like these esp after crimbo, you'll get a better deal if you hold out.
