Hello Guys. I am looking at getting a 2.0 freelander TD4 but am very cautious as i have been mugged off before. This is the first time doing the whole new car thing on my own and being only 20 i dont know all the things i need to be checking or looking out for when buying a motor. Obviously log book and service history but just wondering if there is any thing that goes majorly wrong with them. Appreciate the help. Cheers Max

You really should think about getting someone to go with you or even getting some sort of inspection done if you're not too sure of checking it out thoroughly. The Freelander is a superb car if you buy a good one but can be a complete nightmare if it's a duffer, more so than many other cars. If you've got limited knowledge /experience then you'd definitely do better buying a Rav4 as they're usually more reliable but if you're determined to go it alone then run a search on here about buying a Freelander, look at the faults poll & run searches on VCU, IRD, MAF, three amigos, amongst many other things. Do plenty of research & make up a list of the many things you'll want to check out. Best of luck.

Freelander is very reliable, almost as economical as a prius and the petrol model has the same engine as a lotus elise and makes the same noise too

Get the 1.8 Petrol k series - there a very reliable engine !
also preferably with the economical 2 Wheel Drive diff conversion / mod so that its better on fuel :p

· A good video showing Rear Subframe problem: They knock/click when on full lock or reversing etc:

viscous coupling check (piece of tape/tippex mark either side of viscous coupling on prop (mark in line with each other) after a trip they should be out of line, if not the the viscous coupling is probably seized –

water in rear cargo well – open up cubby box and check for damp/water – rear door seal leaking if so.

oil in water/white scum in oil – either of these head gasket is probably leaking

Coolant colour – nice and clean please!!

Check all gears are nice and smooth,

Try and pull away in second gear with high revs and handbrake on to test for clutch slipping

Handbrakes usually stick on with freelanders so don’t be overly concerned with this

Take out dipstick when running – if back pressure spits oil out then its a blocked engine breather...may have damaged turbo if so!

I'd bring a big folded cardboard box or something, you dont know what kind of surface your going to have to lie on to get a good look underneath.

It might be a bit cheekey to ask the seller to remove the undertray b4 you get there,or better still if your really interested take off the undertray before you agree aprice.Check for signs of leaks on the tray and by looking up,rattle the drive shafts.Check the ird filler nut fo damage. It would be nice if the coolant was green/red.

I dont know what a dodgey diff mount would feel like but give that a shake.I would ask to do a tipex test(I'd much prefer to use duct tape or insulating tape around the prop and joined hanging down a bit,if I was going to the bother) b4 I took it for a test drive, and make sure you get in some full lock turns.
