Well, the inevitable happened today so at least now I can relax rather than all that anticipation over what, where and when it would happen...

It's been a good run of reliability for a P38 - perhaps even a record as I purchased in February? But en-route to dropping son at holiday club today it happened! Driving up a slight incline, pulling away from a roundabout, there was what can only be described as a 'thump' followed by a 'rattle' from behind the dash... Son & I exchanged glances - we had been playing with heater settings to try and persuade the n/s blend motor to nudge towards warm rather than the 'Arctic' setting it usually favours. No warnings and everything was still working, so I opted not to stop - we were perhaps 600 yards from the school. All still looked ok as we pulled up around the corner from the school where the holiday clubs runs. Hrmm - thin wafts of steam encircled the front of the car! Uh-oh! Quick peek under the hood revealed a damp, steaming scene... Ah well, lowered the bonnet and walked around to school whilst she cooled...

Upon my return, I topped up the water whilst peering in to see where it was escaping and it quickly became obvious. The bypass hose between pump and thermostat had ruptured explosively - such that there was a gaping hole!

5 minutes later, sporting red knuckles, I had the offending hose bandaged with gaffer tape, I topped up the water again and with expansion cap on the dash, plodded cautiously the 2 miles home - one eye transfixed to the temperature gauge and stopping twice to add more water. Interestingly the temperature climbed to and then stayed in the middle and apart from a continual clunking of the (very confused) heater, made it back with nothing more than a thin veil of steam behind me where hot water dribbled out onto an even hotter exhaust!

New pipes ordered for tomorrow (full set) and (provided she starts tomorrow), she's forgiven her uncharacteristic outburst.

Perhaps after the workout, the blend motor will work now too? :D

One pipe in 8 months is all that's gone wrong?? Blimey can we swap?

:D The anticipation is almost as bad as the breakdown TBH!

It's not actually the only thing to go wrong - there's a few 'niggles', but it's the first potentially stranding event. (Apart from one 'almost fire' - but that was in the driveway so doesn't count! :p)

Wish I could say the same. I've never been ripped off buying cars but my RR was a right pile of poo. Ok some of the things I've done are because I'm fussy but I did get stitched right up with the engine. So in 8 months of ownership I've done following.
2 wheel bearings. 1 front, 1 rear
4 shocks
2 anti roll bar bushes.
disc and pads all round
tensioner and belt guide pulleys
Alternator bearing.
blend motor
new battery.
new tyres
new exhaust including cats
Lambda sensors
tow bar and electrics.

Now if I'm honest most of the above can be classed as wear and tear at 115k miles but what comes next is where the ripped off bit comes from.

Engine started back firing through inlet. Looks like 80k miles on LPG had taken they're toll on the valve seats. Well obviously sometime in it's past the car must of had some sort of head gasket issue. The solution? Wang the ferk'n head bolts down FBT and hope it holds. This lead to me swinging on a 5ft bar to get undone. I had to grind the heads off 3 of the bolts. Heads were refurbed, ****ty LPG hoinked in the bin (Will be replaced by a better set up soon). Bolt it all back together and turn key. Car ran like a bag of ****. Took me ruddy months to sort it (they're's a thread on here about it).

So did I get con'd? Yep. Have piled big money into it? yep. Do I feel like a spanner? yep but at least I now have a pretty decent P38 which will hopefully go on for another 115k miles

Doz....fair play to you for sticking at it. Never nice to get caught out, if that was the way it turned out.

115K miles is a fair accumulation on a not greatly designed or indeed dare I say brilliantly executed vehicle...what you aint loosing in 10K annual depreciation you spend 1/4 of pa keeping her going!
