I have a 2002 disco 2 td5 manual and have been checking out the cooling system well I took of the front grill and found that I have a electric fan fitted to the front of the radiator.its not a kenlow and it looks like a factory fitted option all of the fixings for it are proper welded on brackets and its wired directly from the wiring loom I cant see any info on the fan and have never heard it working so I am not sure if it works.I am going to check to see if the fan motor is working but its probably the thermostat which I have no idea where it is when I bought it it was a one owner and the owner was a company that makes horse boxes so I thought is it possible that they had a factory fan fitted by the main dealer becouse they used it for towing bit of a mystery any ideas !!!!

yes I have air con and I also have a viscous fan, air con works fine as I said it really does look like a factory option even the wiring for the fan motor comes directly from the wiring loom even the brackets holding the fan look as though they are all part of the original build

it looks like I have got it all wrong have been searching through all posts regarding fans and what I thought was a factory fitted fan for cooling is in fact a fan for the air conditioning I now feel a bit of a idiot, thanks to all who replied and I will make sure I check ALL posts in future

You wasn't 100% wrong though, the official name of that fan is "electric cooling fan" and it has a double purpose, for aircon and for help engine cooling when the engine works very hard and gets above 110*C, as you can see in the attachment this fan is listed in the cooling system general data

Yes but it's still an air con thing, none equipped D2 Td5s don't have a fan in front of the radiator the viscous fan is capable of look after things what ever the engine load.

The reason for there being a perceived requirement for this "over heat" protection is the cooling air restriction through the rad due the the a/c kit in front of it.

When my a/c on on a hot day and possibly stuck in a traffic queue the engine bay gets very hot not only due to the 8 cylinders and 2 exhaust manifolds but also with the hot air blown through the rad by my twin electric fans cooling the a/c condenser... so there's a lot of hot air blowing out from under the front wheel arches at this time, even the viscous fan is fully locked by the sound of it.

I can only say my engine bay even though it gets hot, it has never reached a temperature that switches on automatically "electric cooling fans". So I can't see a cool running Diesel engine reaching that stated high temperature , not in the UK anyway.

interesting, as for the V8 it should kick in at 100*C not 110 ... that cooling fan helped me out not once, especially when i've heard it runnuing after i switched ignition off...it was a sign to check in the engine bay and found that i lost a lot of coolant, once due to the oil cooler connecting pipe and once due to fuel cooler leak... the gauge stood nice at the middle so without that fan i think it could have been worst
