Hello all,

I have been looking for a good LHD 110 TDi 3 door hard top for about a year now (in UK, Spain and Germany) and I haven't been lucky yet. I am sure I join a long queue of others that are hoping for the same luck. Withams have some good LHD hard tops (latest are 1995 models) and have been really helpful, but their vehicles all have the much berated 2.5NA engine. They also inform me that they haven't seen a TDi version come through the doors as yet. Am not a committed restorer, only a meticulous maintainer so I was hoping not to be making a long list of modifications to get it set up for the south of Spain. Older vehicles in Spain can be quite awful due to the rather substandard ITV test and more liberal style of driving (can I say that?), so it somehow made sense to get something first in the UK that had been well maintained.

So does anybody know if Land Rover ever supplied the MoD with such LHD vehicles? Am I perhaps chasing rainbows? It may that I have just to sit and wait a bit for them to filter through or perhaps I am looking at upgrading a base vehicle. Converting RHD to LHD is a no go I think - the Spanish cops won't like it that I'm sitting on the wrong side of the vehicle.

Great forum by the way and a great place to make large amounts of time disappear. Many thanks in advance for any advice here.

I spoke to a mate of mine who has just left the Army.
He said that it was in service, and had used one.
cant help with when they will arrive in civvy street though.
On a more larger scale, at the end of the cold war, the army had hundreds of LHD vehicles. You will see the leyland DAF, DROPS trucks are all LHD.
and are used in the UK on a regular basis. as thats what I used to drive. we also had land rovers and other trucks in LHD.
With the draw down of troops from Germany many ended up in storage or sold off.
Like most things in life, its all about time.

No idea, I am afraid, never had anything to do with military landies at all.
Just might mention, 2.5na is a very good engine if you aren't going to do a lot of high speed road work.
And also, if you want a 200Tdi defender, why not buy a civvy one. Still some good ones around, some have now been rechassised, and it wont have been driven by squaddies.

The consensus seems to be that, for the most part, the ex-MOD vehicles are well maintained and you can get a lot for your money if you buy carefully. The LHD TDi hard top combination seems a rare beast to find anywhere and would probably come at a high price. The 2.5NA engine may indeed be worth trying to start with and upgrade if it feels too underpowered for the hills and long distances.

here is a link for a LHD 90 for sale so the must be 110's about some ware http://www.pablanchard.co.uk/newvehicles-lhd-tul-xd.html

just found a few for sale http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicles/,25,103,/Wolf.htm
Thanks for the links - there are a few good LHD hard tops available from Witham Sales with the 2.5NA engine, so these maybe worth considering as candidates for a conversion. By the way, the battlefield ambulances look superb vehicles to go off the grid with!

Thanks for asking, much appreciated. As you suggest, some patience is perhaps required here for the right thing to come along.

1. Swapping in a Tdi isn't a big job and the 2.5Nad is perfectly fine, so long as you don't want to go very fast.

2. Why a Wolf? Is there something ultra specific you need from one, if not save yourself a shed load of cash and buy a non-MoD one. Ex-mil LR's are generally vastly overpriced for what you actually get.

Obtaining an ex-MOD vehicle was not critical, but the Wolf land rovers had 300 TDi engines fitted as standard and many of their vehicles are quite low mileage and seem well maintained - as for value for money, am not sure. Am not in any particular need for the heavy duty chassis etc, only a LHD TDi 110 hard top and these are not easy to find anywhere. Your comments on the NA engine noted, it may be still worth considering for ease of maintenance.

Look on Witham's, there are a load of Wolf 110s and 90s there. With the 110s, they are letting the worst ones go first. The wolfs (or wolves?) are pretty expensive, and parts are hard to get, although the gearbox and transmission box is better.

You mean like mine? 1990, 200 tdi Ex military LHD. Mine was a pre production one which was made for the French army to try out.

The army has loads of lhd 110 wolfs. When I was in the army and based in Germany that's all we had. They just aren't releasing 110 Wolfs at the moment in any significant numbers. The ones they do release are normally trashed.
