Was on the way up to briercliffe quarry this mornin just set off about 15 minutes ago when the engine starts shuddering and power had decreased  so pulled over lifted the bonnet up all seemed good exept this shuddering so i thought best to head back so there went the days plans. so when i got home turned the engine off had a bru come back to investigate tried to start it up and it was just locking up and wouldent start took the rocker cover off and checked everything and what i originally thought it was about the timing had slipted and the exhaust gases were coming in at the wrong time or something so i checked the push rods, well trully bannanaed 6 out of 8 so not very good so takes the fan and everything off to get to the timing cover gets that off and it was a mess the belt was all mangaled virtually no teeth left on it bits of belt everywere that black dust and the ring welded to the edge of the crankshaft gear has all spilt and was all over the place i think this is the bit that holds the belt on and stops it coming off so anyway.

my question is can you get a new gear on its own i found that you have to get the kit but only 1 place sells it STC4096K - Timing Belt Kit 300 Tdi is this the right thing to get also i think i have to get a seal aswell for the gear somewere and my next question is, is it normal for the valves to bend when this happens as i dont know whether i need the job of changing them do they usually bend when this happens. Thanks.

Hi Gilbo, sorry to hear of your troubles but to rub it in but you missed a good day at the quarry, i got to use my new winch to pull a SJ back up a hill he was cross axelled on, and a P38 rangie got stuck in the in the tank trap i winched that out as well but all his electrics are knackered there were bells, alarms, horn, wash/wipe all working by there self and the interior was under 6" of mud, hope you get yours sorted soon, is it a new engine job or can you salvage it?

erm it is just a case of changing bits in the engine not to bad just time consuming and a pain :(
c
sean: erm i dont really know what else to do is there somethig i should do i was just going to change the valves and push rods and do the timing belt gear seal etc what else?
