got a series 2 I bought as a rolling chassis with engine and gearbox in situ, I have done a lot of work on chassis ie welding, new brakes and shockers all around and now started to build her up, I tried fitting a bulkhead and it basically wont fit the bulkhead is hitting the back of the engine with no clearance, as if the engine is to far back, every thing looks ok with the props and engine/gearbox mountings, but just tried the starting handle in this morning and it does;nt reach the dog, the measurement from the front crossmember to the bottem pulley is 11inches, any idea's ?

forgot to mention its a standard petrol

is that the original engine that is with the chassis?

sounds like the mounts may be for a different engine, if you have done a lot of work on the chassis I'm sure you would have noticed if the mounts look as though they have been moved

it looks like the original one, there's no signs of engine mounts being moved, ill check 2morrow if it is the original, I have measured between the g/box drive flange and the drive shaft flange on the front diff and that's the same as another LWB I have.

That bulkhead the one the car was built with? More the point, you got it on the right side of the outriggers (long shot but a thought).

Thinking maytbe the odd man out here is the bulkhead rather than the engine/chassis combo.

was no bulkhead with chassis, the bulkhead I was trying to fit was from a series three, but my next attempt will be a series 2 bulkhead, but I cant see any difference in them, I am only aware of the difference being on a six cylinder which has a bigger orifice for the longer engine

There's some dimensioned drawings of the chassis in the manual - might let you know if the engine mounts have been moved.

I assume the bulkhead and it's outriggers are in the right place (otherwise the sideways bolts through the chassis wouldn't line up)??
11" between front pulley and front x-member sounds too much. Is the front x-member original? I've seen them modified for power steering boxes, which involves moving the x-member forward.

outrigers are in proper place, have measured them with another chassis iv'e got, i have come to the conclusion that this must have been a six pot at some point and that would account for the distance between the front crossmember and the bottom pulley, ie the space of 2 more cylinders, and obviousley the six cylinder bulkhead has a bigger space for the rear of the engine, so i think the only way around it is to modify the bulkhead.

why not move the mounts and save further mods

yes that would be an option, but obviously the rear prop wouldnt be long enough and the front prop willbe to long

at least you will be taking it back to standard so all future parts will be standard as opposed to remember what bits from what go where :)

yes they are rare, i think moving it forward probably is the best idea, i seem to recolect that i came across a spacer in a rear prop i was working on a couple of years ago, it was about 2" long and fitted between the prop flanges, has anybody else seen one or was i dreaming
