hi there

I currently have the problem that the engine is making popping noises and throws back some smoke through the carb (zenith) :/

It makes this when the choke isn't engaged.
Carb isn't adjusted, could that cause this??

I have read that this could relate to an air leak between manifolds and block but i am sure this is not case for the inlet manifold as i have put new gaskets in ...
however the exhaust manifold hasn't got any gasket (manifold is new)

ANother thing , is my timing set up properly ??
Is 6°btdc (static) right when using 95 octane fuel??? or should i advance it more ???

Or even a weak condenser or coil?? engine has 25 000 km on the clock..

Valve clearance is set up properly ; new head gasket ; engine pressure is fine (after manual) and oilbath air filter clean and refilled..

i hope not bothering you to much with my stupid problems :/

Thank you anyway for your help so far

Is the engine cold? if so could just be backfiring carbs do all sorts of naughty things when cold

6 degrees at 800rpm so 0-2 degrees static (I think) 6 static will be too much.

What fuel are you using - I'm not sure what you get in Luxembourg but I noticed in Belgium there's all sorts of E's (meaning alcohol instead of petrol). Try and get some proper 95 octane petrol (and put some lead replacement additive in it too).

Your best friend for timing is a timing gun. Setting up the carbs should only be tried when the engine is fully up to temperature so get it almost right then drive it hard for 20 minutes then set the carbs up.

I took normal 95 octane , no alcohols contained and I put lead replacement in before filling up

Engine was warm , i let the choke pulled for 20-30 min .
Tried setting up the carb when engine was warm.

Volume screw is set around 2 1/4 turns out .

around 3 degrees BTDC the popping started at lower revs as when you advance it.

And do you know why it throws smoke out of the carb.????? (like when the fuel/air mixture explodes earlier )

The owner before didn't make lots of trips with it... once a month perhaps . But it was kept dry in a garage for approx 10 years.

When i got it it was smoking blue , later black , and now nearly no smoke at all (except with choke pulled an foot to the floor) Carb wasn't set up ...

I don't think a valve is sticking because compression test showed values between 10.9 and 11 bars (around 158 psi) which is really good

(160 psi had the engines when new i think...)

I realized that there was smoke coming from the gaps in the distributor
That's not normal ???????

I hope getting it sorted out without replacing half of the engine :/
