Hi

My landrover manual says the following

"Multigrade engine oil, viscosity SAE 5W/30 to 25W/50, to RES.22.OL.PD-2, or CCMC PD-2, or better"

can anyone translate please? ive looked on the internet and struggle to understand this. Ive found halfords 5W/30 synthetic oil?

Do i want synthetic or what is that what SAE relates to?

"5W/30 to 25W/50" what does this mean ?

Thanks, also any suggestions on whats best for a 1990 2.5 n/a 110? Cheers :)

well i use 15w/40 for my 300tdi and td5 with no probs . but they are turbocharged and im in the tropics so that has alot to do with the oil used .you should be safe with a 20w/40 or 20w/50 . the diffrent numbers mean the weight of the oil at diffrent temps. so the 15w/40 is a multigrade oil that ranges between 15w and 40w the 20w/40 is the same principal according to the temp of the oil . hope this helps

Any decent ordinary 10w40 or 15w40 or 20w50 will do, you don't need semi synthetic or fully synthetic without a turbo. Just about every oil on sale will be a higher spec than that.

For the last 3 years in my 300 tdi i have used 15/40 diesel oil from my local wilko store at £8.50 for 5 litres, my engine is on just over 160000 and loves the stuff! I once made the mistake of asking my misses to get me some oil, she paid £24 for some castrol magnatec, my truck hated it, did not seem to run the same so i changed it out with the cheap stuff and engine was smooth again:confused:

I tend to use 10w40 in winter, 15w40 in summer, but basic mineral oil will do the job , just change it a bit more often (at it's price it is affordable).

last oil change I used Castrol Edge full synth 0-30w Turbo Diesel oil.

Very high spec for a 200tdi but I have put a second 13 row oil cooler in the front and the oil pressure has actually gone up 5psi despite using a really light oil.

Just leaks to watch for?

Stu as its a normally asmatic diesel just go with cheap 15/40w. With that engine ,it really does not matter what you put in it! I used to use Havoline from ASDA in my old N/A. cheap and reasonable. just remember to change it at the right intervals.
