My 10w40 semi synth oil is now changed every two years that's around 3000 miles as my disco is just a 'weekend car', I've never had a problem with doing that.

U don't say what engine, but my old RRC and now the disco are both petrol so the servicing is every 6000miles or one year which ever comes first according to LRs service sheet.

For a full synthetic 6 months is ridiculous unless of course you are doing 20,000 miles per year or working the car pretty hard.

The recommendation of Landrover is 12,000 miles but I'd do it based on the dipstick or how the car is driven but rarely more than 8,000 miles on an oil change (given the amount of time spent sat in traffic) but if the oil remains looking clean and smelling 'sweet' then I don't do it until the recommended mark - even if that is three years. Contamination is the only real issue with synthetics since synthetics don't break down in the same way due to evaporation / oxidation etc etc. Synthetic oils simply don't break down in the same way as the old dinosaur juice stuff.

The dipstick is a case of how does it look and smell the rest is based on experience as in if you do any 'hard work' with the car such as towing heavy loads then do the change more often.

I was running Magnatec C3 but recently switched to Shell Helix Ultra Extra.

When changing the filters use only genuine items and do both the canister and the rotor at the same time, they are cheap as chips so no reason not to.

Side note - not all synthetics really are 'synthetic' they are marketing hype. There are true synthetics based on Ester's and then mineral oil based 'synthetics' the former is better than the latter by a significant margin. Lot of good information here >> Oil Information
