Engine Mounts - Best place to jack engine up from?

Hi All,

Going to replace my engine mounts on 98 4.6 v8 and just wondering where is the best place to put jack to allow me to jack the engine up?

Is sump ok to use? or is there a better place?

well I thought of that as i don't have one been reading up on the matter and it seems people just use a jack and lift engine enough to get the mounts out. One person said he used the oil reservoir.

Just wondered if anyone done it on here.

I don't know the V8, but I'd be happy to jack the diesel with a suitable plank of wood on the Jack to spread the load.

Yeah I tend to agree. Can't really see any reason why not to.

I'm only one side at a time so its not the full load.

Will give it a try..

Sump is not a structural item and could fold, using planks may help.....I'd do it properly and use an engine crane personally.

Good idea. Sounds like crane is best option.

Sump is fine providing you use a suitable piece of wood to spread the load. And you are looking to just raise the engine slightly and not the entire front end.

Yes I have piece of wood to spread load and rubber pad for well padding

.

I only want to lift enough to get the mounts out. So length of the thread bars so only 3/4cm at the most.

As long as you are careful there should be no problem. Standard practice in garages the world over. Mind you there are some ham fisted bastards about.

Lol very true. I've always jack on sumps before when supporting engine etc. my main concern was if it broken the seal on the sump. But if it does then no biggy.

Had a Transit motorhome with the V4 engine come into the garage. New engine but it knocked when rev'ed over 3k. The only way to get the engine in was on a trolley jack and the sump had been bent to impede the oil pick-up. Sump off and a big hammer sorted it.

My ears are burning

Engine mounts are pretty easy to do. I changed both of mine in about 1hr 30mins with a tea break.

1) undo old engine mount TOP bolts first.
2) Using a good plank of wood jack the engine up (I used the sump and it was fine)
3) now remove the bottom nuts on the engine mounts
4) the mounts will now be free but you'll not be able to wiggle them out without really jacking the engine up. ( I was worried about my air con pipes getting nipped so did the next step)
5) using a good pry bar put it between the bracket the mount attaches to on the engine and the chassis.
6) using a fair bit of force you can lift this side of the engine up high enough to get the mount to wiggle out (it'll be clear when you do it)
7) Swap old mount for a new one
8) repeat on the other side
9) lightly tighten TOP nuts up first (will help with relocation when lowering engine)
10) lower engine and locate mount bolts in the correct holes and tighten all nuts fully.

Thats how I did it didnt take long and was really easy. Just watch your fingers.
