engine control light is burning, engine doesn't start

Hi.

Since a few days our 2005 Freelander diesel won't start anymore.
My wife could just drive home with the car. As I wanted to see at the problem, the engine went out after 300m and started no longer. The engine control light is burning. It is with this ! character in it.
I conected already the obd, but there was no fault shown, but
Have anyone have any idea what it could be? A friend of mine, who is also a mechanic meant it would be the fuel injection pump, because no error is displayed.
Can someone help me out?

The fuelpump i fitted new about 2 years ago, and the filter......... doesnt' know when it changed the last time.
How an i check of the filter is the problem?

If you don't know when the filter was last changed, do it anyway.
Can you hear the pump in the wheel arch power up when you turn the ignition on.
Does the engine crank or does it just make a clicking noise.
Standard obd readers won't pull all faults. You need one that will talk to all the ecu's on a landrover.

The engine make a normal noise when i try to start it.

Was the car struggling to accelerate before it died.

When my wife was driving the car yes.
When i tested the car no, but i could drive only about 300m with the car befor it died.

That does sound like classic low pressure fuel pump failure. Obviously, I'm not stood next to the car so can't be 100%.
But I'd start there. And replace that filter!

You will need to do more tests then.
It could be the filter is blocked, or the high pressure fuel pump is faulty.
Possibly the crank position sensor is at fault.
It is strange you say the engine management light is on, yet you have no codes. This would suggest the reader used is not fully LR compliant. Do you know of an auto electrician in your area who could do a full code read.
Or simply the pump is whirring but is on its last legs and not supplying enough fuel.
Anymore info you can provide would be helpful.

Today the car is tested again with prof stuff.
Now there was a fault code, P1190. After a reset the fault code was gone and the car started again.
Also i could drive with the car. But not far. The enigine died again as soon i came above 2000rpm and again didn't start anymore.
I remeber to when ichange the fue lfilter. I did this together with fitting a new pump, so about 3 years and 15K ago.

Thanks. I did find this already when i googled the fault code.
But, my English isn't good enough to understand it completly. Can you explane it? Is the problem the fuel filter or not?

Going by what's gone on in the past, I'd tend to agree with Skinny - 3 years is more than long enough for the pump & filter to need changing again. It looks like fuel starvation and that code is related to fuel pressure - so presumably it the pump/filter or a pressure sensor.

Unfortunately it looks like you may have to just decide which bits you want to swap out first - unless someone can give a specific P1190 means xxx is at fault.

P1190 is not a specific code. It can relate to a few things.
Personally I'd do, fuel filter first, then the pump, then the fuel rail sensor.
But up to you.

Hi,

Here the promised update.
The car is driving again. It was not the fuel filter or pump, also not the rail pressure sensor, but that what remains. The most expensive piece, the injection pump.
My friend who has repaired the car, checked the pump inside. This was completely worn out. As if the car already 300K. However, the car has only 98K.
Also, a few months ago, there was some other problem with the pump. This was leaking diesel. All O rings were weathered. Was so strange to.

Sorry to hear that, but at least it's all sorted now. Hopefully that should be the last HP pump it will ever need.
