Alright guys?

I have a 2.5 NA in my landy. It was been reconned 100,000 miles ago and runs sweet. However as im sure everyone is aware it lacks a bit of power.

Ive thought about swaping the engine for maybe a 200 tdi / TD5 or even a V8 petrol.

Im put off the V8 petrol as I do a lot of fairly deep wading. Have been to a few P & P days and see a lot of V8 with the bonnet up drying **** out!! Something that NEVER happens to my trusty N/A.

Ive also been advised that the TD5 isnt the best engine for me to go for either as it has a lot of electric/ECU crap that is an issue with lots of water involved.

Then im left with the 200/300 TDI. Again ive been advised that the 200 is more the one to go for as they have more horse power (not sure if this is true). Now my understanding is that the 200tdi is a simelar engine to what I have + a turbo.. How much more performance am I going to get.. Is it worth the hassle?

I guess that ideally I want a very simple but large V6/V8 diesel. Are there any engines that can be used/adapted to fit a landy?

Any advice will be great!!

Thanks in advance!

Can anyone give me any advice on this?

Maybe if i ask spacific questions... Rather than waffling on....

Is the 200TDI much more powerfull than my 2.5 NA?
Does the 200 TDI have more horsepower than the 300 TDI?
Am I going to have problems wading deep water with a 200 TDI?
Is there any other larger diesel engines which I could slap in a landy without too much modification?
Is it possible to waterproof a V8 petrol?

Thanks in advance....

It's a great idea the only main difference between the 200 and 300 tdi's was emission levels.

Deep water wading in any diesel is always better than a petrol. Get a snorkel and you can go as deep as the snorkel top. Don't forget to do the axle breathers etc as well.

There's loads of diesels that'll fit but why bother when you can get a decent disco 200tdi engine for £250.

No you can't waterproof a v8 for deep wading. Well not without loads of hassle anyway.

Now do a fooking search for how to fit a 200tdi disco engine in a 90/110/defender.

If you want a 6.2ltr V8 GMC chevy diesel already fitted in a discovery for £2850 visit this link Hull 4x4 :: View topic - 6.2 V8 Diesel Discovery

Thanks for the info Red!!

Holy Sh!t that chevy v8 diesel is the bollox!! Do you rekon it took much to adapt/fit it??

With regards to the 200 tdi... Do you think it would perform as well as my NA for crawling off road? On that link for the V8 diesel someone mentions that the turbo lag is a pain at low revs?

I never had any trouble in Low 1st in my tdi disco.
HE referring to turbo lag on the same engine as his they come N/A or Turbo his is the N/A version
Only other thing is it'll need to be auto as you'll get thru drive shafts at an alarming rate with a manual box.

drop a 200 in mate. loads of people do it. others are izuzu and mazda conversions which both work out well but you need to do plenty of modding for turbos/radiators/mounts etc.

as daft says, defender 200's are loads more £££ get a 2nd hand scrapper disco and use the 200tdi. you can get mod kits very easily from the net for about £250 which will allow you to drop the engine in. also use the disk rear axle of the disco while your at it then sell the rest on. dont forget to keep all the engine ancillaries (sp?) and the fuel sender unit.

Its what goes in the top of the fuel tank with the bobby-up-and-down-float-on-a-piece-of-wire coming off it which tells you how much fuel you've got left!
Note if you buy a ****part one they wire up differently to the Landrover original (as i found out greatly to my cost last weekend!)

Hi There,
Definately go for the 200tdi swap, my n/a used to run away when it saw a hill, done the swap myself and never looked back, loads of power, close to 3.5 v8 if not the same, had both so can make comparrison.
The 200 will go streight in no mods needed, you dont even need to take the floor panels out, if you have nimble fingers you can get all bellhousing bolts in with what space there is, you will need the 200 exhaust though, and if i remember rightly before you lower the motor its a good idea to get the front downpipe routed as its fairly tight once engine is in place.
Also get rid of viscous fan and go for leccy one, peugot 309, or of course kenlow, depending on how much brass you want to invest.
Hope it goes well for ya.

Hi again,
Forgot to say, my motor came out of a rite off 90, disco motors you have a little more fiddling as turbo is on exhaust as apposed to being ontop of motor as in 90 lump, cheers.

Thanks for the info Griff! What is the reason for using the rear Axle from the disco? Is it in some way better than the defender one?

it has disc instead of drum brakes, thus giving you discs all round.

im quite happy with the way the brakes perform on my 90, so didnt bother with this when i did my conversion. maybe at a later date as you can pick up these axles for around £100.
