Hi guys :)

My back box is fubar so I was scanning for replacements and then I came across this: Land Rover Discovery 300 Tdi Complete Sports Exhaust System with De-Cat Downpipe | eBay

For an extra £40 or so it seems I can get a full system, I was thinking about binning the cat and mid section anyway so this looks a good idea...but, it's so cheap I thought I'd better ask the opinion of m'learned friends on here :)

It's mild steel so obviously won't last for ever, but it has a 2 year warranty which seems ok to me.

I assume it'll be louder than currently and maybe give me better mpg (bonus!) but what are the drawbacks and has anyone else tried this system? There seems to be a few for around the same price btw, I selected this one as it comes with all the mounts etc and I would replace them also I think :)

Many thanks!

Sorry just noticed I copied the disco one, they do one for the defender also but one of the things I noticed is that this particular advertiser is that they say on the ad that it fits any 300tdi...which I don't think is possible..

Could anyone comment on the suitability of this part please? The defender version obviously haha.

It's so cheap it might just be worth a punt? Not made of money though so loath to risk it if at all possible!

Many thanks :)

don't see why not, just don't expect it to last umpteen years. you mightn't like the loudness though :)

a standard system for a 110 decat is about 90-100quid btw

or go uber cheap (includes midbox) (check part no's)
britpart ESR2297 ESR2384 ESR2383 looks to be £75 delivered at island4x4

I recently fitted one of these, although it was from an ebay trader named Regisexhausts, link here: LAND ROVER DEFENDER 110 300TDi COMPLETE DE-CAT SPORTS EXHAUST SYSTEM | eBay

It's mild steel, and has 2 year warranty same as yours. The rubbers are wrong, so buy new if yours are crumbled. This is what I'd say about it:
1. Car now sounds a bit throat'ier....more farty than sports car, obviously louder.
2. Engine breathes a lot better (make sure pipe diam is as standard or more).
3. There's a bit more umpf in the throttle, and it has improved mpg slightly (maybe 2-3mpg).

I was surprised that it didn't need any work doing, fits were good and supplied me with metalized gasket.

hate to put a downer on this but if your defender had a cat when it left the factory you will need it for the MOT the rest can be modded though or so i believe

iirc the 300tdi could come with a cat or no cat from the factory, so you shouldn't require it for the mot

Fortunately my 90 is an actual "90" as opposed to a Defender as it's from 1988 so I can bin the cat..lord knows why the previous owner installed it when they swapped a 300 in... (?) :)

Phew!

Is that the gasket from the turbo to the downpipe? Sorry for ignorance, I'm at the maintenance stage of competence where I changed the wiper park switch tonight and actually whooped as I sat in the car and tested it and it worked haha :D

I'm tempted with this kit but I must say I'm in need of saving the pennies a little so I'm going to check out the mild steel one bought separately first..although, my mid section, replaced by a garage locally in September is already looking tired. Is mild steel really that badly resistant to salt/weather/water?

depends, cheap crappy chinese stuff can be.

Yep, that's where the gasket goes.

Reason I paid a bit more for my mild steel one is because I wanted a flexi on the downpipe. Makes installation a hell of a lot easier, especially if if necessary to re-install particulate filter for MOT - this is an ongoing debate..!

Yes mild steel really is that bad, look out for the mega cheap systems, you'll see that the welds are AWFUL, you can bet your bottom dollar that's where most of the rust problems start.

I would recommend getting rid of the mid-box as it can cause the box section of chassis to rust because it's v.close; otherwise use ceramic tape.

Alm.

From a quick look at the top EBay link. The 90 sports system is just a standard system with a straight through mid silencer removal pipe. The back silencer seems to be the restrictive one anyway, so can't see it's much of a help, just noisier?

Late 300tdi exhaust still seems the best option getting rid of rear box.

However, I am used to fitting exhausts to Evo's and mk1 escort rally cars, so may be far off the mark.

Do you have a part no for the late 300tdi one? Does it go around the rear fuel tank in a 90?

Reason I am asking is that I am fitting a rear tank in my 300 so will need to change some of the exhaust.

not sure on the one for a 90, but if yer modding it, the 110 goes round a rear tank.

IMO, remove the centre box and keep the rear, the mid is the bigger silencer, the rear is quite small.

The late 90 300tdi exhaust is matde to be routed round the rear tank as the late 300s were the same as the TD5

I think only the front downpipe is the same, the centre and rear joins in a different place, also the mounts don't all line up.

Ok, so I would need pretty much all of the exhaust system then?

Interestingly my 90 is one of the last 300s, but has an under the seat tank.
