I believe blanking/removing the EGR is a good mod but am a bit confused.
Had a look at the Difflock link and it looks straight forward
Bur when I looked at my 1995 300tdi Disco it has an electrical connector on the EGR and the vacuum pipe goes to a module under where the chock lives.
If you remove the EGR do you just leave electrical plug tied up somewhere and will it effect the engine managment system????
Any one done this mod as there seems to be some confusion on various threads

I'm guessing (because you didn't bother to tell us) that you have a manual gearbox TDi 300 ?

When blanking/removing the EGR valve, you merely tidy away the electrical plug and block off the black plastic vacuum hose, I used a self tapper.

The electrical plug will have no impact on the engine ECU because if your vehicle is what I suggested above, then it doesn't have an engine ECU.
 
I have been advised to leave the EGR unit in situ and just blank off at the manifold end.
I understand that if the law changes the EGRs will have to be put back on and they could well end up being like rocking horse droppings plus there is always the insurance issues.

It is indeed manual gbox so I assume the auto ones have all the electronic gubbins

...........and if the moon was made of cheese we'd all be heading off there with baguette and Bordeaux in hand - but it's not!!!

Of course anything could happen, but if you think of the political will required to do this and to make it retrospective, to a diminishing population of vehicles, it seems highly unlikely to me. The only issue the government has been bothered about for the last 10 yrs is smoke, so keep your vehicle well serviced with a new airfilter every year just before the mot and you'll be fine.

And in any case, you could always hold onto your EGR valve just in case - I've got 4 in the rubbish bin of my shed right now, if you want one???? Good price mister, make special deal for you :D:D:D;)

I suppose thats a good point you have made, but you are wrong about the moon it is made of cheese and it has a face :D

Hey Pauli, break duly given. Yes, the autobox cars - from about '96 I believe - have EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) which was LR's first foray into electronic control of diesel engines. They are slightly more powerful (122 versus 111bhp) and run really well when de-EGR'd and de-Catted.

If you are new to Discoverys, might I suggest that you give yours a full service, for 2 reasons: 1. the vehicle will thank you for it and run better & 2. you will learn so much about your car in the process.

1. Engine oil and filter change - you'll need 7ltrs of semi-synth 10w-40 oil;
2. Fuel and air filters - you can buy a set of the three filters from Paddocks for about £6.50+vat
Filter Kit - Disco 300TDI

3. Gearbox oilchange - you need 3ltrs of MTF94 or DexronIID oil;

4. Transfer box oilchange - 2.5ltrs of EP80w-90 to GL5;

5. Front and rear axles oil change - each axle needs 1.7ltrs of EP80w-90 to GL5.

So you can see that you need 6ltrs of EP to do the the axles and trans box.

6. Clean out the fuel sedimenter - found on the chassis rail just in front of the rear offside wheel.

7. Do a cambelt, idler and tensioner change - you'll need this kit:

Timing Belt Kit - Disco 300TDI to VA560897


TDI 300 Discos are great vehicles but they do need regular and full maintenance to ensure they perform to their best.

Get yourself a Haynes manual - not the best but user friendly.

If your not sure or confident about removing the egr you can always leave it in place and just put the blanking plate at the intercooler hose end of the egr. That way everything is left in place looking standard but still has the desired effect.

Are the fluids you have quoted particularly 3/4/5 the same for a td5 cheers

Just to keep the thread updated
I have done-so far
1) Engine oil and filter
2) Air filter
3)Fuel filter
4) Swivel one shot grease
5) Checked/adjusted front wheel bearings
6)New radio
7)New battery
8) Sorted most electrical probs
9) De catted + complete exhaust
10)De EGRd
11) New serpentine belt
12) Have a cambelt kit but am scared to do the job(No dial torque wrench:eek:

Have on order Radiator,water pump.P gasket,Thermostat etc.
Reason for all this work is Disco was left outside PO Mums house for 2 years but hey I got it for nothing:D:D
When all this is done will have to tackle the rain leaks and rust:eek::eek:
