Auto engines had more BHP to allow for gearbox drag. If ya can find one for a manual ya get a bit more ooomph.

think on 300's it's 12l upto 98 21L after that. I could be wrong though

edit wiki tells me

11L for 200tdi 16L & 23L for 300TDis 11bhp for manual engines 122BHP for engines fitted to autos.

I don't think the prefixes on the engine number run chronologically - rather they indicate the original vehicle the engine was for:

Serial code prefix:
  • 16L (non EGR), 23L (EGR), 24L (EGR Auto) Defender
  • 17L/18L (EDC Manual), 19L/20L (EDC Auto), 21L (EGR Manual), 22L (EGR Auto) Discovery/Range Rover Classic
(from The 300Tdi Engine | Land Rover Expedition)

If the history of the engine is unknown, you might be better off opening the timing case and having a look at what is fitted - there is a kit to update the old style to the new style so even an older 300tdi might need the new style kit if it has been modified.

The early type has a lip on the tensioner pulley, the newer type does not.

Dealers were instructed to paint a yellow square on the left side of the timing case to indicate that it had been upgraded to the new style but there's guarantee this has been done so I would definitely have a look inside.
