Productive weekend on the old, if not battle scared girl.

New intercooler fitted and oil cooler relocated above it. Spacing increased between condenser intercooler and the radiator so hopefully help cooling.

Oil cooler rubber hoees fitted, just trimmed the original hardlines to make the fit better.

New intercooler hoses fitted. Couple of old parts used, which then exploded on the test drive typically.

Psi powerbox fitted.

Just need to replace gearbox lines now as one has a small leak.

Need to try an reset the wastegate as im only recording 12 - 13 psi boost so a little down with the bigger intercooler.
Increasing the spacing of the RADS will not help cooling, unless you seal the ends and side cooling air will just escape through the gaps instead of going thorough the next RAD taking the path of least resistance.

Pulls very cleanly through the rev range with no perceptible lag from the larger intercooler and boost levels are mainly stable at 1bar with a small boost spike to 16psi in 2nd gear.

Rather impressed with the old girl..

Just got to stop the aircon fans kicking in now.

Why would there be lag from the intercooler?
 
Running larger bore hoses and much larger intercooler = larger air volume etc....

I was assuming that there would be potential for initial lag due to larger volumes..

Either way. Its not so all good things.

The engine can only consume so much air. The turbo is more than capable of keeping it supplied. :)
 
I understand how they work. Just worked on assumptions from my petrol turbo tuning past.

It is a problem with petrols because they are throttled by air. They have a throttle valve. When the throttle is shut the turbo can stall, when it's opened again you get lag because it is stalled. That is why you need a dump valve to keep the turbo spinning. No such problems on a diesel as they are throttled by fuel the air is always there.

Apparently the turbo from the bm 3.0 is a good swap it's a more capable unit and by all accounts gives more low end boost so all that fuel your dumping in there gets roasted fully . My series 2 has a bm 2.5 on a manual pump and no matter how much fuel it gets it won't boost worth a ****e under about 2500 rpm and the general consensus is the TD 04 is maxed out with only a small increase in fuel where as the 3.0 turbo is nowhere near it's full potential . I've been doing some research and a hybrid is looking like the best answer fitting both a more effective turbine wheel and a billet compressor wheel but these items need to paired together in order to meet your needs ie top end mid range or low range rpm and power requirements also the use of ball bearings can give a huge boost to getting your turbo to spin up faster .

Modern diesels run under very strict emission control. I believe that the EU is about to or has brought in strict rules as to how they can be modified. Anything that increases emissions is or will be illegal. But i don't know what year of cars it will run from or if the rules will be retrospective.
 
They may well do what they want but we are leaving EU so they can do as they please also many of these upgrades can be used to further reduce emissions as well as gain hp so will the EU applaud us for reducing emissions ?? Not likely .

i would really love it if that were possible. The only way to increase power on a diesel is to increase fuel. Anybody that tells you different is lying.
