SORRY but i only seem to come on here when i have prob. My drive shaft broke ive since got a new one. So first off what oil do i put in diff and do i fill it right up 2nd some one told me i have to grease the wheel bearings but wouldnt that just get washed off from diff oil?. Thanks :cool:
 
If it's not too late, replace the other drive shaft as well. If one has fatigued to the point of breaking the other may soon follow. (mine did!)
 
Mine both snapped near the inner splined section, filling the diff with swarf. Not sure if there's any way of spotting a potential problem without using an industrial x-ray machine! For all the hassle of having to remove the diff again to replace a second broken shaft it's probably worth putting a new one in before it snaps - think of the cost in lubricant and gaskets (let alone time) of having to repeat the job!
 
I Used to carry spare rear ones with me in the back,and here's a little trick for getting the broken bit out the diff without removing the diff. Buy yourself one of those telescopic magnets(a good one not cheap crap)and a metre length of steel bar,tape the magnet to the bar and the next time the halfshaft snaps take it out of the axle slide the magnet tool into the axle it should hold onto the broken bit of the shaft so you can pull it out,pop the new shaft in and you'll be on the move again in about 15mins!

If you stop the vehicle a soon as the shaft breaks - which is rarely practical (one snapped on a hill in Evesham town centre, the other in the middle of Bath) as soon as you drive any distance the snapped ends create loads of bits of steel which need to be flushed out of the diff. And both of my broken ends had to be removed with a hammer and chisel!
