drive member stuck on halfshaft

I intended to change wheel bearings on the front driver side today. But failed miserably. Firstly i struggled to get the bolts holding the break caliper on, due to the amount of locktite and the rust. But with a lot of straining and a breaker bar got it off. Then when i attacked the hub its self i removed the bolts holding the drive member on and the circlip and thrustwashers, give the DM a tap and tried to get a chisel behind it but nothing, it was seized solid. Looking at the DM and the blue locktite i dont think its ever been removed before. Hss anyone had the same problem,and if so how did you sort it. Wasted hrs today for nowt .

jack the wheel up, there might be alot of torsion acting on it that will grip the splines. Then give it a smack and see if it breaks free
 
Did you mean jack up the hub its self , im a bit of novice , so sorry if im being stupid.
I only jacked the one side of the vehicle up to do it. Would it be better to lift the whole front end.
 
We had the same problem this week when trying to replace the swivels.

As we were dismantling the swivels anyway, we took out the top and bottom swivel pins and took off the swivel housing/hub as one, withdrawing the CV joint and half shaft.

Then put the housing on a vice supporting it with the back of the cv joint clear underneath, a good 15 minutes with the sledge hammer and the cv joint can be knocked throught the drive member.

Obviously penetrating oil is a good help and the end of the drive shaft needs protecting, when its exposed a piece of plate can be used and when its sitting inside the drive member a bolt of smaller diameter than the thread than that in the end of the shaft can be put in the end of the shaft with washers under the head. Give it a good wire brush up when its all apart, good luck!
 
Just an update, managed to get the drive member off today. A mate came over and had this a few times,he walloped the half shaft with a copper hammer a few times which gave us enough of a gap to drive two chisels either side of DM.
Helps when youve done it before, bit of info for all the other novices like myself.
