I was just pondering: why wouldn't it be possible to downgrade the electrics to not need a BECM? There are plenty of older cars (ie P38 age) where the HEVAC, windows, central locking, radio etc can all be standalone systems. Lights and horn too, through relays. Power assisted braking, TCS and ABS probably are already independent here so this leaves SRS, EAS and engine management- each has its own mini brain so can they run without BECM?

It has been done, there was a post about it a long time ago. Main problems are signals for the instrument cluster and other signals that are processed by the BECM from the auto box etc. Certainly do-able but a pretty big job. The power board with it's relays could easily be adapted for the lights and some other things.

Worth the hassle, i think not. :);)
