Do you think I need a fuel filter?

Don't put heating oil in your bio, if it really needs thinning down either add a bit of unleaded to it or find a different source of bio as it should be the correct viscosity to use neat all year round if it's been made properly.

5% unleaded should beall you need this time of year.....i.e. 5 lts in 100 lts of bio.You have a really good battery-There is absolutely no way mine would crank for 40 secs.......it has to catch in seconds and that is with 100 % homebrew bio-are you sure your lift pump is good? Also you do need your glow plugs with bio-are they working?

It is a good idea to keep a sample of your fuel in a poly bottle (pop bottle) outside near the car-that way you can see if still liquid after a cold night

It does tell you whether or not it is worth while cranking her over.
You have to remember biodiesel is not as volatile as derv, and as such, you deffo need all 4 glow plugs available (on cold mornings anyway)-I would bet you find some dud when you check em.In our current weather, you should not need to add any petrol to bio-unless we head back to frosts.(petrol lowers the cetane value ,so only add when needed)
Mine has been on 100% for at least the last month.

Ah that makes sense. I am leaning towards the glow plugs. The lift pump is ok. Is there an easy way to test.glow plugs?
Thanks
Jon

Barmatt,
Thanks yet again.
She started almost on the button this evening after adding the unleaded this morning despite the recent hail storm and being able to see my breath which suggested it was quite chilly!!
I will test the glow plugs this weekend. Bit confused though, I can get a set of 4 for about £11 off eBay yet my local motor factors want £11 each for them
On eBay it's these Land Rover Defender 300tdi glow plug kit ETC8847
Land Rover Defender 300tdi glow plug kit ETC8847 | eBay

yet Car Spares quote these NGK - Ref: 7906
Glow Plug for your LAND ROVER DISCOVERY Mk II (LJ, LT) 2.5 Td5 (139HP)

Confused? I am!!

Jon

The same plugs are about £3 each off Paddocks so £11 sounds about right off ebay, as for the latter ones they are for a TD5 so will be more expensive. Give them a go if they are **** send them back.
