I'm not selling yet - but in the future I may. But when I look at what I've done to the old girl I am now thinking to myself, what am I going to do when I want to sell her.
Just lifted it by 40mm and putting bigger tyres on. Also synergy 2 and EGR bypass etc. Future I may put straight though exhaust. I just seem to have put things on bit by bit as I've gone along.
But who in their right mind will buy a freelander in this state? Surly if you want an offroad 4x4 you'd get a disco or defender.
So do people buy these and are they worth more or less than a standard one. Or will I have to take all the mods back off before she will sell?
Looking on Fleebay I cannot see any on there - so any thoughts?
Cheers:)

Yes they do sell, but the audience is vastly more limited, as its a pretty specialist thing. Im doing various mods to mine, but nothing that cannot be put back to standard, or hidden.

Some of us would buy them! You never get your investment back tho!

Always the same with mods on a car - there your mods not mine. Most would rather a good straight standard example, or is that just me? Anyhow I agree with DD's comment above.

How did you manage to Photoshop the tow rope out of the photo:confused::confused:

I haven't! Look closer, its cable tied to the a bar, I bent a shackle when I pulled my mates D3 out backwards! Freelanders too light and I had to keep snatching it and wasn't going to cut it of for a proxy cheap shackle!:(

DD and I were discussing these things this very evening. For me, the Freelander is my "perfect" car - moddable, capable and with the mod cons I need but I can still fix it at relatively small expense and for a 4x4 it's very "handy in stays."

So I'm going to keep it for as long as I can.

In 10 years time newer cars with stop and start systems and convoluted electronic warfare suites will be so expensive to fix that folks won't bother and they will be totally worthless. My Freelander will still be going if I can help it :). If nothing else, I think that's why Freelanders really are true Landy's, they will be just as ong lived as Fenders as long as people care enough to take care of them :).

Will.

Agree entirely with your sentiments on this. So, we can keep our FL1's indefinitely of course but any move to a newer model ups the gizmo count and complexity issues - this is unstopable, my lads car puts the wipers on when it rains and turns the lights on when it gets dark - I have to look out the windscreen - and this is what buyers want, or have been sold!

Ok tell me if I'm being really cynical here but newer cars seem to pander to people who can't multitask and manage the mental complexities of dealing with the multitude of operations involved in daily driving. Oooh I need the wipers turned on for me, and the lights when it's dark, and my arse wiped for me.

It's not "smart" technology, it seems to me to be a crutch for people who are happy to exchange comfort for reliability and then wonder why it costs so much to fix stuff when it inevitably breaks.

Things like the Merc emergency braking system have alot of merit, but all this spoon feeding is driving the cost of cars up, and the dependability down. Personally I want no part of it, and I think that as a community older Landy owners share that sentiment in general. I trust my own instincts and spanners, thankee kindly.

Will.

Good quote - is it to do with the right to bear arms?

Majority of drivers these days are not car savy. They neither no nor car how they work and gizmos sell. Im sure there's a Focus that parks itself but its not for me - or you.

Nah it's probably to do with something really banal like public conveniances. But hey it fits.

Most people now never check their oil and water or much else, modern cars pamper people to much and lull them into false sense of security. They are marketed is infallible, but in reality they are only just ahead of the old cars that drank oil like a russian woodsman drinks vodka in winter.

Bah I'm just grumpy.

Me too! Bloody Landrovers makes us grumpy:)

most people dont live in a real world ,more a virtual world ,checking oil wouldnt come into it but more pixel count on in car screen

They don't even really know that much mate, I'm a veteran PC user and i'm as good with a computer as I am with a spanner, probably better actually. I have a strong curiosity about things, I don't think most people share that they just want things to work. That's fine when they do, but very frustrating and expensive when they don't. I find it reassuring to be in control and informed, so I rarely panic when things go wrong :).

when my disco 2 bites the dust what would i replace it with disco 3 ,disco 3 is a modern car comfy, powerfull but not mechanical in the same way ,(obviously it is but it crosses the rubicon into modern car)luckily disco 2 bodies dont rust like disco 1 so i hope i can keep it going for many years

Stick a modern driver of modern cars in any series for a month, that will teach them how to drive :)

Features I regards as minimal essential; Power steering, power brakes & ABS, central looking and electric windows and heater - not fussed about AC. My first car was a Daytona yellow Mk2 Escort - modern then but v basic transport today.

Agree - My bro had a Mk1 a few years later, it was bright green, a bit of a heap as I recall and ended up on its roof in a field, then he got a Mk2 Ghia, that was nice. When you think how basic these cars were, Ghia meant, had a rev counter!

My post should read something like "things I could not do without".
