Good morning all.

Wonder if anyone can give me some advice.I'm looking to upgrade my 1994 discovery mpi with lpg fitted. Im in two minds whether to buy a Td5 or a 4.0 v8 with lpg.I know that both engines have their own problems so not sure which will be best to buy...Has anyone got any views on which is best?

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave, this is a hard one to answer without:

1. Your budget;
2. Your usage;

TD5's especially when remapped are a brilliant car but, I doubt anyone would argue that IF fuel costs weren't an issues, we'd all be driving v8's. But they are an issue. LPG is ok and you are obviously used to it.

When looked after properly, I can't see any longevity issues with v8 but I can see lots of smiles.

To be honest I suspect it will come down to what cars are available within your budget, so spill and let's find you a great Disco !!!!

bugger all wrong with the standard TD5 (shame it needs a brain to work) - it'll feel like a racing car compared to the Mpi, read some threads to see how few TD5 issues are raised compared to the numerous elderly V8s that have issues, adding LPG kit to them just compounds the problems

Hmmmm....

Cracked heads causing diesel in the sump and potential runaway engine, dual-mass flywheels that fail, oil on injector looms and ECU, probably a few more that TD5 fans keep quiet about :D

LPG on a well-maintained V8 in good condition is not a problem, but try running one without the correct coolant and off you go.

Most repairs on the V8 are do-able without too much diagnostic gear, while the TD5 has Nanocom, developed almost exclusively for it.

It comes down to how much YOU can do yourself to keep the truck on the road, which determines how successful either vehicle choice will be.

Too many people try and run a Disco on a restrictive budget, and don't do all that is needed to keep them running properly.

I'm a diesel/electric fitter/engineer, whatever you want to call me, and I looked at the TD5 and V8 when we were buying last year. Apart from the one issue of fuel consumption, there is no 'golden feature' on the TD5 that makes is a LOT better than the V8.

listing TD5 faults without comparative numbers is pointless - you must be a part time politician

LOL!

Not at all, if you look at all/most of the LR forums and see what faults regularly crop up, then exclude the common stuff like the electrics etc etc., then you can quite easily filter out the regular problems that are peculiar to the TD5 and the V8.

After all, the only difference is the engine and electronics, almost everything else is common to the TD5 and V8.

For every V8 head gasket or 'liner problem' you'll find a TD5 with a cracked head or oily injector loom etc etc.

Thanks all for your replies.....They have really helped alot.....Seems like both the td5 and v8 have their good points and bad points...

To answer a few questions..................

Budget? I reckon 10k for the right car with the specs i want.
Usage? 4-5k miles per year,half of those with a caravan on the back while i indulge myself fishing in scotland.
Fuel Consumption.....I'll fill it back up when its empty lol.

With regards to being able to do repairs....i am a qualified mechanic and auto electrician.

Have seen a few models/specs that i like......If i can get hold of one,i think a Metropolis fits the bill or if not an ES premium.....
Have looked at a couple of Disco's today and the dealers seem to be making up the prices in their heads especially when you check what the cars actual book price is.

10k ? ya can have mine...an i,ll come an fix any faults fa that price! lol

Having had a defender TD5 for a works vehicle & a V8 disco 2 for my own vehicle, i know which one I prefer.

Test drove a TD5 disco before I got the V8, diesel had not a lot of go, not much more than the defender to be honest and the fuel consumption on Defender was horrific about 22-23 mpg tops...

Was enough to convince me......
