Discovery TD5 vibration & lacks power

I have a TD5 GS automatic which has the follwoing problems.

Idling - slight engine vibration/shudder
Exelaration - vibration when going up hill in top gear
Top end speed - Struggles to get to 75/80mph

Anyone with any thoughts on this one?

Ahh, my friend you and I have the same problem, took mine in got them to change the oil, diesel filters, air filters, injector cleaing liquid in. And no change, mine only does it though once it get's warm, you can drive for about 20 minutes and no problem, then shudder and bad power/acceleration. Once she has cooled down again then all is good, me thinks you and I should join forces and maybe together we can between us figure it out. So if you symptoms are the same as mine, changing filters and injector cleaner don't work.

have you checked the ECU/injector harness for oil?

Possible that the big heavy double carden joint on the prop is fooked beware these do just let go and cause damage but do give viabrtions before. Also i found mine viabrating not too long after the torque converter snapped off the flex plate not good.

I am having the exact same problem as this, did you ever find a resolution? I'd really appreciate any help!

Do it yourself!

All you need to do is find the ECU in beside the jack, and take the plug off.

If it is oily with black engine oil you just saved yourself hundreds of pounds.

Spray the plug and the socket with WD40 or similar and clean it all out nice and dry. An air line does a very good job.

I feel sure there have been threads here before about this, so maybe there are pictures you could follow?

Hi, i had the same sort of problem and found oil on E.C.U red plug, i stripped it out sprayed electric cleaner in and used compressed air to blow it out from the back of the plug, make sure you disconnect the battery first.

Somehow, Mr Ratty, I don't think Phillip is listening to us.

We can only help those that are willing to help themselves CharlesY.

I can't see the point in asking what a fault is and how to cure it on a public forum and then when you are told how to do it and how easy it is you then go to a garage to get it fixed. That kind of defeats the object in my book. If the reason for asking on the forum was because the garage didn't know of the fault in the first place I certainly wouldn't leave my vehicle with them.

Never mind. There's still plenty of people willing to give things a shot themselves.

Thanks for all the responses, took the plug off and cleaned it out which seemed to work for about 30 minutes but the problem came back so took it to a garage and had them replace it. Picking it up tomorrow.

However, not quite sure how to respond to the last two (very bizarre) posts from 'Ratty' and 'CharlesY' other than by laugh!

Well now, even though you made a cure, you took it to a garage and threw money at them!

Holy Smoke!

You proved (a) what the fault was which was exactly what Ratty said, and (b) that you didn't clean it well enough.

Lots of people would have had a second go at it full of enthusiasm, and cleaned it more thoroughly.

Let us know what the garage charges you.

What we are trying to say is that the job itself is an easy job to do. If you took the trouble to ask the question you should have taken the trouble to do the work yourself.If you wanted to know what the problem was and have it done for you then you might aswell have just gone straight down to your garage.If you went to your garage and they didn't know what the problem is then I would steer clear of them. If they didn't know what the problem was before they were told by you I wouldn't rate them as a garage.Hopefully it all makes sense for you now.

No problems. Glad to help.

It hasn't got our backs up. We just don't like to see people getting ripped off by garages. If you did the job yourself you would be looking at a bill of £40. I am gonna guess that by taking it to a garage (not a main dealer I hasten to add) It will cost you in the region of £250. If it were a difficult job or required specialist tools then garages are great. If it's relatively straight forward job which this is I would do it myself and pocket the extra money.

It is a diy job and very easy to do but never mind.Have a look at Discovery2.co.uk heres a bloke thats not only got time to play about with his motor but unlike me got the time to photo ever step,and put it on the web.It doesn't cost to research and have a go.
You cant buy a better car than a Landrover to have advise on tap.If you've got a landy you've no need for a garage just get some oil on your hands and have a go!! Good luck next time.
