Discovery 1 lift now grinding noise :/

Hello all. I fitted plus 20mm front and 40mm on back springs on the disco one and now I get an intermittant grinding noise when driving above fifty and only at moderate throttle. Is goes away if I ease off or put my foot down. It's not heavy grinding but can be fairly loud. Any ideas?

Probably the lift kit, I imagine. It's not designed to be lifted 8" at the back. Think of the poor stretched and bent propshaft!

Ooops! decimal point in the wrong place. Apologies all round. It'll still stress the propshaft a bit.

Hmm. You may be right but would that not be constant grinding? and more so when the gets bumpy? It seems to occur on the flat..

And it's only 1.5" after all..

you can prove it or not by removing prop and driving in difflock

A buggered prop UJ is the most likely culprit.The sound they make can be intermittent, but most likely to be heard when either accelerating & braking, as this is when the prop is most under stress.

Would you mind if I ask at the risk of looking a pratt why 20mm lift front and 40mm back, does the car still sit level ?.

the spring seats at front sit at an angle while back is flat,not as much is needed at front to lift

coz a lot of us carry tools and recovery gear in the back, so in doing this type of lift it means the car then sits level again

I've got a 3inch lift front and back on my disco 1 and don't have any kind of grinding noise, so doubt it's directly related to the lift you've put on, which is a lot lower than mine

Thank you jamesmartin so my 50mm lift springs were most probably
40mm / 50mm .

yes, i made that mistake years ago before kits where available 50mm extra both ends

Yes. Oddly maybe slightly higher at front.. not sure why but is very close.

hmmm. an update if anyone is still following this. I put some new wheels on it yesterday and now I am getting clunking noises in turns and when slowing down... The wheels defo not catching in a straight line... Seems every time I jack it up I have issues after! Confused!!
