Hi all

Newby here

Have a Disco 4 which I have had challenges with replacing the air tank and the compressor. Been fine since then then had a mad moment a couple of months ago when it lit up like a Christmas tree. Faults included ABD, EBD, Parking Brake, Gear Box, Suspension, Terrain response, Engine temp. Also the speedo and revs dropped to zero and the fuel showed empty. On restart it was yellow engine light and then all good.

We just travelled up to the west coast of Scotland and it's now doing it constantly. Great timing with wife, 3 kids and all our gear. Limped it back to the campsite, but when I went to restart to see if it cleared the gear knob stuck on D flashing for a while. Eventually it allowed me to restart.

At a bit of a loss now. The nearest landy specialist is over an hours drive away. Is it safe to drive? Is there anything I should check - as a total novice - that might have come lose and be causing this? I doubt it is the battery as that was replaced less than a year ago and it's had a long run up here. I have a basic code reader with me but it's not showing anything.

We did film the errors if I can work out how to get them on here

Many thanks in advance for all suggestions. We're a bit stressed.

Dave

Thanks Kev. I’m at Wemyss Bay on the west coast near Aran. Really appreciate your help. I’ve found a specialist an hour away, or more in limp mode! Not called them yet. That’s first thing tomorrow but I’d rather take it somewhere nearer or have options if they know of anyone local. Regards Dave

Hi Dave,

There were!! 2 on the map! Paisley and Clydebank!! And both have not been active for some while?

And last one was Glasgow not active since 2019??

Sometimes it works?

How old is your battery? A bad battery can cause this. Maybe go find a place that sells batteries and get them to test it.

Thanks, I'll give him a call. It's probably too far as were on the other coast but he may have some ideas. Have called a few local ones I have found but they are all booked out.

Hi. It's less than a year old so it should be OK. Weirdly the doors are not unlocking properly and have been doing for a while. The car is now dead, refuses to even try to start or have the ignition come on if you start without the break pedal

At a mechanics. Battery and alternator check out ok. 16 faults on the engine. All seem to relate to loss of communication codes cleared and only constant fault is parking assist. Going to take it for a run and see if it can generate something. Also hopefully getting earths checked later

How did he test the battery?, I would not discount the battery regardless of age, d3 and d4 eat them for breakfast, especially if you do short runs and leave the interior lights on to much.
I have had as little as 18mths out of an exide on a d3 used for short commutes.

Beginning to think you may be right. He had a volt meter but not a battery tester. He said the voltage was ok. It’s intermittently not starting now then seems to want to play again. Also may be unrelated but some door locks are not opening when I press unlock. Was driving ok after he cleared the codes then as soon as I turned on the air con boom everything lit up. And bar holidays it is just short commutes

Even though I said above the Exide lasted 18 mths, I could tell well before that all was not well odd random warning etc
The replacement Yuasa from Halfords is doing well.

I bought the Exide from Tayna online battery store, and when i contacted them before the warranty was up they said I had to get it back to them, try and ship a wet lead acid battery as a private individual! so shall never use them again.
That is the beauty of Halfords, turn up and sort it there and then.

There is a Halfords not far from you, Yuasa 019.
Thanks. At the moment it's going nowhere.

Got back to caravan park, and it is now totally bricked. Mechanic did a battery reset and cleared codes but no joy. Limped it back on site, alternating between loads of errors and a constant 3 - HDC, stability control and emergency brake assist. That's not the 3 amigos I think. Mechanic guessed it was transmission module as when he cleared the codes that was stubborn, but he doesn't have time to fit me in for any more diagnostics / fault finding. To be fair he was a really nice guy who only saw me immediately as I was on holiday and didn't want paying, but reluctantly accepted something. He was also the only person that could fit me in. I called around a lot!

Also weirdly the tailgate is now locked shut which is annoying as it's full of gear, so 3 door faults now. When it was scanned it was showing permanent errors on two door modules before the tailgate issue

Going to get the RAC out tomorrow and see what they say, then argue about them recovering it home, miss a chunk of my holiday and drive back up in my Astra to collect the family. Gutted as paddle boards etc are all going back with it
