Ok, it may be a strange question....it may be a question that shows me ignorance...it may be in the wrong section! But, what are the main mechanical differences between a Range Rover TDi and a Disco TDi of the same approximate early to mid 90s vintage? For someone like meself who does no serious offroading but lives in Spain where roads sometimes disappear overnight if it rains, would a RR be a bad plan, should I stick to Discos? Is fuel consumption better or worse, I have a vague feeling I've heard tales of suspension probs or is that a dream?:)

Prefer the manual locking of the LT230 in the Disco rather than the Viscous coupling in the Range Rover, although I "think" some of them had a manually lockable centre diff , pretty much everything else is the same.

id stick with a disco, IMO they are the more practical having 7 seat and bigger load area, also seem to do a little better off road..

I have just changed from a 4.6 1996 mk2 (p38) range rover to a 2003 disco 2 td5, my dad still has a 2.5 diesel range rover, i also used to have a classic.
The range rover is a lot softer ride but in my experience the p38 is equally as good off road, mine or my dads have ever let us down off road and we use them around the shoot, where the forestry have been using some large machines to remove trees and they have really churned the ground up.
The air suspension can be a problem and some people remove them in favour of springs, but a bit of patience and it is not too difficult to overhaul the system and usually cheaper than the spring option. The suspension on my d2 is a lot firmer, i have the ACE fitted but it doesnt float over the bumps like the range rover. The electrics on the range rover can be a problem as they age, so much to go wrong and it usually does, also the spares are quite expensive compared to the disco.
Both cars are nice to drive, both are in my opinion equally as good offroad, but the disco is easier to live with.
Fuel around town my disco does 21mpg, my dads range rover 2.5D does 18mpg around town and is chipped but still a lot slower than my standard disco.

If you mean tdi RR classic then that is one of the later classic. That compared to a disco is gonna be a 200/300tdi disco. The 300tdi engine came in the rangey. Thes interior will be the "soft dash"-very similar to the dash in the disco. The classic will have better seats. The disco will probbably have 2 more seats (7). the drive is perminant 4x4 on both. The rangey will have a viscous coupling to lock the diff-once tration is lost.the disco will have a manual diff lock. both will have low high range.I personally prefer the manual selction as you can engage it before ya need it.Suspension both will be on coils but the rangey will have had air bags as an option. The air suspension could be a possible headache, however if working then its great, lorries have been using em for years.Ive used both off road.Id prefer the rangey as an alraounder, its just nicer. But ya wouldnt go far wrong with either.
