Hi all.
I have installed a 200TDI in to my series3. she performs great and i am very happy. i have heard about someone has put disco or rangerover diffs on to up the gear a little.
1/ Can this be done as a simple swap over with little or no mods?
2/if so does it up the gearing a little?
cheers chaps

straight swap do rear first to try it ,aboiut 30% increase, you need to check you have oil filler in rear diff pan or diff housing or fit one any 10 spline diff will do ,eaqrly rr where used as had oil filler in diff housing

Like James says it's a straight swap, for the rear take out both halfshafts, prop off and unbolt diff from axle. The front is a bit more involved, I take drum off,hub off and backplate off to get the shafts out then prop off and unbolt diff from axle.

Before I did my V8 I didn't use first gear to set off it would set off in 2nd and in 4th gear it was screaming it's nuts off at 60mph, now it's fine.

Ive just done the rear diff on my tdi s2 and its transformed the car.
Doddle to do just watch all that creamy snot hit the floor when you remove the rear half shafts!
I have seen pics for the front where the bloke has removed the wheels left the steering and brakes connected and just pulled the whole hub/swivel assy out far enough for the shafts to clear the diff, this is how im going to do my front one.

just done my back one today, all wenr fine but had to drill and tap the axle pan to put in a filler, starting the frront 2morrow, and splitting the axle each end to pull the hubs and shafts clear of the diff, i can't understand why some people only do the back one, surely it would be impossible to put in 4 wheel drive with two different ratio axle, by the way i have used defender diffs they are same as the range rover 3.54.1ratio

People do the back one first as its an easy way to test if you like the set up, before the hassle of the front one.

Front one done today
Tips, buy new nuts and bolts for the swivel assemblies make reassembly so much easier.
New gaskets for the diffs as they are pennies.
Use a small ratchet strap to support the swivel assy whilst its pulled out of the axle to save straining the brake hoses.

Update: Gave Nobbyraw a hand with the task last Sunday. All done in a day with a 2 hour break for lunch down the pub (thanks Nobby). Points to note are; it's simple to do and the change in driving characteristics is incredible, from screeming lump to slick ride. My advice would be to anybody who has transplanted a 200TDI into a Series is that they MUST do the diffs. I would also secure a supply (12) of the nuts and bolts that secure the swivel housings to axle casing as suggested by Lynall, Partnos 90576510 (BOLT 3/8 x 1 1/4 BSF THREAD) and 251322 (SELF LOCK NUT 3/8 BSF), we used Stainless M10's but it's very tight through the holes in the axle casing.

Well thanks to my good mate nick the diffs are magic, on and off road.
went out last night for a play. done a speed test around 45-50 mph engine was not working hard at all. put my foot down and left my mates standing. i think flat out my dora is good for 70mph
