I hope you guys can help me again. My D2 td5 automatic cut out on us today. Fortunatly it was about 100 yards from the house. It started but sounded rough like it was only running on 4 then got worse and sounded like it was on 3 cylinders then just dead. After pushing it back to the house i had a look at it and found oil on the ecu plug and thought, well its the injector harness. A mate round the corner came round with his diagnositic kit and read the codes which came up with injector 1&2 open circuit. I cleaned all the oil from the ecu, its connector and the connectors to the engine. I also cleaned the injector harness and the injector connectors. All injectors had the same resistance when measures and after cleaning the loom buzzed through from ecu plug to injector plug. This cleared all faults from the ecu but it still would not start. I then changed the fuel filter, but it would not fill with diesel again. This made me suspect the fuel pump and i did some more tests from the ecu through the relays to the pump and thats all ok and the pump has power. I cannot though hear the fuel pump working.

So basically i think im asking if the fuel pump is working should i be able hear it or at least feel it with my hand on the top of it, and if the fuel pump is indeed faulty is there anything i should watch out for as the 4 pipes coming off it look hard to replace without getting leaks in the lines???

Thanks for that, At least i got the other issues sorted. Are there any issues with changing the pump?

Simon

Hi Simon, it's a straightforward job to change the in-tank fuel pump. As you know you get access to it via the access hatch under the boot carpet approx in the centre and slightly to the rear of the boot floor. There are only two issues to be mindful of:

1. Take car to note the orientation of the combined pump/fuel level indicator as you remove it from the tank. Getting this wrong can muck up the readings from your new unit;

2. The new unit is spring loaded and needs to be pressed down with a degree of force to fit the retaining collar, so don't be surprised about this.

Good luck Simon

It should still start if the fuel pump is buggered. My fuel pump went about 20k ago, but the disco would still start and drive. The test I was advised for the fuel pump is to rev the engine to 3000 rpm, if the fuel pump works it will rev ok, if the fuel pump is buggered it will only rev to a little over 2000 rpm. Switching the ignition on there was no sound from the pump, but the engine would always start, so I don't think it's the pump that's gone. Maybe there's a problem with the electrics to the fuel pump, maybe there's a safety mechanism that's accidentally kicked in that's cut the fuel supply?? But I doubt it's the pump itself.

Tsangpa, I have have checked all the electrics from the ecu signal, trought the relays and the inertia cut off. With the ignition on there is power to the pump but no noise or vibration if i place my hand on the pump itself. Also the new fuel filter is not being filled with fuel. The car will not start at all at the moment so i cannot try you test, but as there is no noise or fuel being delivered i think the pump is the biggest suspect at the moment.

thebiglad, when you state to note the oriantation of the pump/sender, do you mean the postion of the float or the actuall oriantaion of the pump when refitting to the tank??

Thanks for the help guys.

Regards

Simon

Well i have a new pump on order and it shound be here tomorrow or the next day. I was going to take the pump out today but decided that i will do that when the new pump is here so that there is less chance of dirt and stuff getting in where i dont want it. I have also decided to give it a full service and change the engine mounts as well after i have it running again. Hopefully then with most of the little jobs out the way i can start on the 110..

Pump arrived this morning and it was fitted reasonably easy after the advice on here. Went through the priming procedure but when i can to start it the battery was too flat to turn it over properly, so had to stick it on charge. Hopefully when thats done it will all start ok.. Fingers crossed..
