Disco 3 limp mode issue HELP !!!

@Badspanners any luck with limp mode yet?

My D3 has been in limp mode and I can’t get it to clear.
The only useful thing the scanner is coming up with is an egr code P0403
the odd thing is that I had the egr’s blanked last year and then a remap and it was working fine. But then it went into limp mode on the M5 and has never cleared.
Am I correct in thinking that the map should prevent this code from appearing and more than likely the code is a red herring?

Did the remap defo include EGR delete or was it just a power/torque gain?

Hi smithy thank you replying
I don’t know I’m sorry. I have a local Indy disco guy who blanked them off and then took it somewhere for a mapping.
Is there anyway I can find out myself or just go back to map guy somehow?

I’ve just been reading some of @gstuart ’s helpful posts about some of the terminals to check behind the battery so will try and give that a butchers tomorrow. 👍

Yep, Gary's a font of knowledge on d3, drink freely 😆

Yeah get in touch with the remap firm, should be able to pull the job up off your reg and tell you what was done 👍🏻 if the EGRs were mapped out it shouldn't be throwing codes relating to them IMO

 will do. Cheers fella. I’ll send an update when I hear something.
My mate with a scanner did try and reset the codes and we also disconnected battery terminals and shorted to do a reset but no luck.

Indeed ref the flashing mapping of the egrs

an ordinary remap as in for extra power can write over other maps

if u have a diagnostics can look in the live data to see if the egrs are moving , shown in %

plse also ensure the map and Maf are plugged in correctly , unplug them , use some contact cleaner and plug back in

plus have u pulled ur map sensor recently, need to ensure its clean or will throw an error

also need to ensure ur battery is in tip top condition

plus just remembered if one of the egrs fail it locks the other one out and then throws the fault light

hope that helps

Thanks for that. Will look under bonnet later at map and maf 👍🙏
I’ll need to do a bit of research as the only time I’ve got my hands dirty before is oil changed and changing a prop shaft on a d2. I can’t remember what they were called but there was some fiddly pieces that had loads of pins in them that needed to be aligned. 😂
I enjoyed it though.

I’ll have to see if my mate can come back with a scanner to check the valves.
Again lack of knowledge but the valves are still capable of movement even though blanked off? Never thought about it but I guess it’s like your wife thinking you’ve stopped smoking so you smoke out through the window. Window equates to blank. 😂

The map was theoretically for blanking the egr’s. Might have been other stuff involved. I was never told at the time as my garage took it somewhere to get done.
Is it an easy job to get someone to map them out again? If they were not done already?

What year is your D3?

I’m going in! 1st stop the maf.
Actually the 1st job before the maf is critical. Place trusty paint roller extension in place so bonnet doesn’t smack head!

Grubbier than a grubby thing in a grubby place?
If I don’t have contact cleaner then brake and clutch cleaner ok? My mate in the village has some of that.
Or just wet kitchen towel. ?
I have remembered that there should be no ‘penetration’ however much I want to.

As for the maf sensor does that need a special cleaner please?

😮 no way. Just checked. Who would have believed that! Thank you. 😂

hiya

that’s great you’ve resolved the issue as just read ur other post ref the EGR

indeed my MAP sensor was also the same before blanking my egrs , I just used some contact cleaner but indeed things like brake fluid etc are ok, i Used a small pick very carefully to remove the build up ensuring not to touch the small sensor at the bottom of the hole

assume u done the same on cleaning the hole out very carefully on the map sensor

also if it helps the first pic is ur MAF and second pic is ur MAP , as the egrs are now blanked the Map sensor will stay a lot cleaner , I removed mine after a year and found it very clean

Before blanking the throttle body , egr pipes and inlet manifold fill up with all the carbon

also have to ensure when there blanked to remove the butterfly valve inside the throttle body, need to put the pin back in , seen a few posts where that’s been forgotten in situ

I even smoke tested my intercooler system as I was trying to find errors that were showing air leaking , found them in the end at the egr pipes where it connects to the throttle body and also at the turbo and air turbo intake pipe , that was a right nightmare to replace the small turbo hose

the turbo actuator arm can and does stick, when the ign is turned off theres A software that motors the turbo actuator arm back and forth to prevent it from sticking , i greased all mine up

hope that helps and once again really chuffed it’s been resolved , plus with that Map sensor now nice and clean it should be more responsive

lastly when u get chance ref diagnostics u can check all of the sensors via live data , so handy to have

here’s also a pic of what the turbo does as it opens and closes the vanes , turbo starts to come in around 2 -2500 revs

Great images and points. Thank you for taking the time. 🙏

I’ve not been able to get the map sensor as clean as yours. I maybe am bring too gentle.
Yours looks like new. You used a tooth pick? How far is the sensor in the hole? Or just don’t put anything in the hole. You can se mine looks nothing like yours.
Did you replace the o-ring seal?
Given that the sensor is that claggy is there anywhere in the pipes around the sensor that will be clogged as well? Does it matter?

Re the butterfly valve I’m not sure as I didn’t blank them myself.
What are the symptoms of butterfly valve not removed?

I’m excited about my live data scanner and just been out today and bought a multimeter, coolant and some brake/clutch fluid.
Wanted to buy power steering fluid as well but didn’t. I wasn’t sure what fluid was already in there and you’re not supposed to mix?
So probably best just to drain and renew?
It’s not long had an oil change.
I dont know when the auto trans or transfer gearbox last had any attention

I’m going to love this old girl into submission.
I’m using the list of lubes and fluids in the photo.

Re the map sensor again. Occasionally I can push the throttle a tad more and it almost takes a few seconds to respond. Not always though. Dirty MAP sensor?

Hi mate

ur so very welcome and so nice that it’s appreciated , ur be surprised of some asking for help and don’t even say thk u

as you’ve been so appreciative that’s why I don’t mind helping u as much as I can like everyone else on here

I used an angled metal pick, sprayed the end of the map sensor with contact cleaner and very carefully dug away at the hard carbon, the sensor is at the bottom of it

must confess after a lot of investigation I found out the D4 Map sensors had a larger hole so I bought and fitted a genuine D4 map sensor , as mine was out a little bit as when they don’t work the ECM will use preset figures that are programmed into it

Last picture showing the D3 Map sensor on the LH and D4 one of the RH

must confess it got rid of any delay and better acceleration, alas though it might have just been me imagining it but then checked the live data did show and improvement , after the engine was warmed up I found a quiet road and gave It some beans , Jesus wept it went like a scolded cat , after spending 3-4 months going over it with a fine tooth comb was rewarded

it was like night and day , but that was after resolving bad intercooler air leaks , sticky turbo actuator rod and some earths weren’t right that several modules used, wasn’t correct on the reference Vdc ,

at the end of the day i was very impressed of how nice it drove

sorry I’m waffling ,

if the butterfly valve is left in it would feel extremely sluggish , doubt it very much it’s been left in after driving for months with the egrs blanked

when u take the map sensor out again , get a torch and look down the hole in the throttle body to ensure it’s clear, u can put a small screwdriver into the throttle body hole if it’s blocked it won’t hurt anything

u got her Autel AP200 didn’t u plse , the white one , indeed chexk the live data which shows the map / maf sensors, plus the fuel injector offset which is done with the engine at tick over

hope that’s useful to u
