i have just done a search which i should of done in the first place and found out exactly how it works but will it do any harm to the car to drive it like this whilst waiting for a new prop?

that is a confusing question/statement. It is full time 4x4 yes all your diff lock does is send 25% power to each wheel when its engaged - by locking the diff. where as it sends power to all wheels that have grip usually.

Never drive on tarmac or a majorly grippy surface with your diff lock engaged, you will damage it.

it wont do any harm if a prop is removed.

It can get more complicated than this with traction control and the like but for most peeps this will be the set up they have on a standard Defender except for the locking rear diff.
