When my manual was doing what you describe I found the top joint on the linkage mechanism was loose so that when I moved the diif selector lever to the left to engage difflock all that happened was the slack in the joint was taken up without engaging difflock. Didn't affect selecting hi-low.
The joint is the top one and is held together with a nut and bolt. Although the nut is nylock the, it had simply undone itself.
New nut and bolt, problem solved.
The bad news is you need to remove the centre console to get access to the joint unless you have very long thin arms and are double jointed.:)

Finally got round to looking at diff lock problem, looked at it, squirted full can of wd40 at it, belted it wiv hammer, now all working fine, got to go and get mucky now,
thankyou bobbler for you link, twas extreemly helpfull.
i will search before posting next time :D
