Appears to engage with dash light on etc but when rear wheels spinning yesterday on a hill, fronts were apparently not moving. What to check please?

Diff lock wont stop all 4 wheels spinning if traction is lost at front then fronts will still spin. And same on rears.diff lock is to be used before you get in trouble not to get you out of it.

That's my point. Rears were spinning yet fronts weren't even though I had diff lock engaged. Or at least I thought I had but maybe it hadn't properly engaged?

you wont spin all four wheels even with centre diff lock activated, it locks the front and rear axle but due to the open diff design in the axle, drive is transferred to the wheel with least grip on each axle, the only way to spin all four wheels would be with aftermarket diff locks fitted,

Thats what i meant johnlad itl send power still and spin the wheel with less grip.

So diff lock is all gd and works but it wont stop you getting stuck

Lads you're still not understanding it. Rear wheels were slipping but fronts weren't moving and we're off the ground.

Which is what i said at beginning when i said if your spinnin the rears front wont spin and other way around
If rear are spinnin and fronts are off the floor them fronts wont spin as powers being sent to rear.

If diff lock was engaged when you became stuck then your not going to get out of being stuck just woth diff lock.

In you manual it says engage before you think your goin to lose traction.

Have you got a winch or mud tyres to aid your recovery or tow straps and good set of mates

I think what he is saying is :- when diff lock engaged he is only getting drive to rear wheel with leat resistance & no drive at all to front, instead of 1 rear wheel turning AND 1 front turning

If only have one wheel turning on each axel the disco is going nowhere, central diff locked or not.

Johnlad's post #4 has the explanation of why.
