hi me land rover stoped yesterday and wont start !! i believe it to b the mechanical pump ??
ive undone the glow plug tops and tried to prime the lever but no fuel comes out !!
so i took of the pump and now it pumps with with the primer whilst not attached, ie fuel comes out of the filter
any ideas on what it can be please ??
sorry its a 200tdi lump

sounds like its not on the cam mate. put it back on and turn over the engine for about a second and then try and pump it again, hope that makes sense. not sure why you took out the glow plugs though.

thanks big ad
have tried what u said turned it over and by hand !! but nothing
its wierd cus when i took it off it worked n pumped fuel everywhere put it back on n nothing
or just get a new 1 ????

the landy just stoped and wouldnt start !! my m8s a diesel fitter n he came rnd to have a look and was just as baffled !! we tried turning it over by hand to try n get it on cam but nothing happend i took it off and pumped it fuel came out so we put it back on and tried to prime it but again nothing came out !!!

g man i was under the impression the 200tdi was chain rather than belt !! pls comfirm that for me !! and is it easy to snap the chain/belt ????

as far as i am aware all tdi engines had belt driven cams and injection pumps apart from those that have been converted to run gear driven set-ups

timing belts can let go at any time if they are old not sure about the belt life on a tdi but normally on cars its around 70,000 miles but i know of a few that run as low as 36,000miles and some that are higher

dosent sound like the belt to me, might be the fuel stop solinoid on the injector pump, it the wire has broken or has a bad connection then as far as i am aweare the solinoid will engage and cut the fuel to the pump, if this happenes then the engine will turn over and not start.

will check the wires out tomorow big ad !! just spoke to me m8 n he said if i take the rocker cover off n then turn it over to see rockers moving then aint the belt gone
i do hope it is the wires dont fancy changing belt in this weather

yes it might just be the solinoid as this happened to a mate of mine last year, you could always run a wire from the battery to the solinoid and see if it starts, if it does, job done if not, back to the drawing board but keep us all informed.

If the belt had gone you'd be getting an awful lot of noise from the engine, even someone with no experience of an engine would likely think it sounded odd.

Stop solenoid sounds a good check as Ad says, turn the ignition on and remove the spade connector from it, if it clicks, it's working, if not, there's your problem.
