Not had my freelander long so hope someone can help me confirm if the diesel pre heater is working as expected.

Today when I got back from work I heard a noise from the front of the car after turning the engine off, this did not sound like the cooling fan still running, on investigation the exhaust for the pre heater was letting gasses out. Is this normal?

My understanding is the that the pre heater is just that and only runs when the engine is still getting up the temp. My journey is just under an hour and I didn't even have the heater set to hot for the last half hour so there was no need for the heater to be pushing out hot air. One thing I did notice during my journey was that the temp gauge fluctuated from bang on in the middle to just under a few times (not something I would expect)

Any advice anyone has will be very welcome, cheers.

Managed to do a bit of Google searching today and it turns out the pre heater will purge gasses once the engine has been switched off.

Still need to look in to why the temp gauge is fluctuating so much though.

The gauge on some vehicles will show a fluctuation under a couple of situations:

1 when the thermostat opens (or closes)
2.when the electric fans cut in and cut out.

If it stays in the "normal" range I would say it is nothing to worry about.

Do you meant the FBH ?

My temperature gauge has been dipping below where it normaly sits as well, I think the reason is I have it in the demist position almost constantly so the AC is on & the fans are running quite fast, if I switch to the facia vents & the AC goes off the coolant temp climbs back to normal.

I have the heater on between half and ful, a/c on all the time and the direction either to screen only or to screen and feet.

My temp gauge once up to temp stays bang in and doesn't really fluctuate at all. Scangauge also confirms that. Stays at 89 degrees almost all the time. Driving around London. Mainly quite short journeys. Say 25 miles over a period of 6 hours with about 5-9 stops of about 30 mins a time.

(No wonder my fuel economy isn't great :D )
