Defender TD5 thermostat

Hi guys, my Defender I've always had the problem that in winter if I drive out of town the car warms up (very slowly ) and reaches 84 ° (read by nanocom) but when I go into town or down a road in the mountains the water falls about 60 ° and the indicator is obviously in the blue zone. I thought it was normal but with some research on the internet do not think so and I'm not the only one with this problem.

Therefore, when the water cools the heater does not work and in the mountains my girlfriend say that are get the penguins

Question, when your TD5 reaches the temperature keeps it or if you stop for traffic, go down a road in the mountains it cools?

could be thermostat stuck open ,low coolant level can also give similar

coolant level is perfect

Both TD5s I've owned cool off in traffic. Even during the summer months.

ive never driven in the mountains so cant give an opinion

Mine does the same. Fitting a rad muff has helped but bot fully cured this.

If it snows this year I'll be removing the viscous fan to see if that helps keep the temp higher.

I didn't notice any difference when I took the viscous fan off.
New OEM stat fitted with new rad when I changed engines.
However I dont have the accoustic covers fitted so my engine may run cooler because of this.

So far I have owned a 200tdi a 300tdi and a TD5 Discovery. All 3 ran cool when I bought them, and needed new thermostats to get any decent temp into the engine for heater to work, as well as keeping the engine at proper working temp. All 3 were fine once the stat was changed.

Just got my first Defender a 300tdi. And bought a thermostat just in case.

Today I went to a meccanic that has exprerience on Land Rover and said that it's not normal it doesn't keep the temp. In this days when I go around in the city i'm allways with the temp on blue.

I have no exprerience but i think that if a car cools down if you don't drive over 70km/h in not normal. Isn't it?

Next week he will change my termostat, stay tuned

Mine was the same until we changed the thermostat - just make sure you get a genuine part or you might have to do it twice like I did!! Gets up to temp within 5 miles now and stays there in traffic (most of the time!!)

Its made a big differance with cabin temp in the winter - I do tree work and it's really nice to know that at the start and end of the day the cabin will warm up quickly (ish) rather than be freezing cold all the time
