Dear forum
Driving along quite happily when my defender td5 (x reg) just cut out without warning. I haven't been able to start it since. Fuel pump whines when turning on ignition but is making a different sound to usual. Engine turns over fine but no indication of firing. Thought I may have run out of fuel so run the purge sequence but made no difference.
Could it simply be a blocked fuel filter? Didn't really want to remove the fuel pump unnecessarily.
Any insights gratefully received.
Thanks

Can you get it on diagnostics?

If I was to hazard a guess, I would look at the Crank sensor.

If you want to check the Fuel pump, pull the fuel pipe off at the FPR and see if you get flow by letting it flow into a bottle.

Cheers

Thanks neilly, wouldn't have considered this. Apologies in advance for silly questions but where is the crank sensor located? Also what is the FPR? I'm relatively new to defender owner repairs

Crank sensor is on the bell housing, look behind the starter motor.
FPR is Drivers side of engine at the back, you will see the fuel line coming into it.
I would recommend you download the RAVE workshop manual as well.

Cheers

Neilly,
Sorry for late reply. You were spot on, it was the crankshaft sensor. Took it out, cleaned it up, put it back and off she went!
New one came in the post today.
Many thanks for your help, saved me a lot of time and expense☺
All the best.
