Defender front axle swivels

Hello,

Is it possible to simply drain all of the oil out of the front axle swivels (with a drain plug for example) - looked but nothing obvious on vehicle.

Vehicle is a 1984 land rover 90 2.5d n/a.

Topped up at weekend. Nearside needed a small amount of oil but offside was already full but colour of oil was not good therefore would like to drain and replace with fresh oil.

If it's original early axle then they do have a drain.
Can't remember exactly where as it was a while since I did mine. It is only small though, probably covered in crap and hard to see.

Later ones didn't have a drain. If there's none, maybe someone has fitted later axles.

Not as such.
Early swivels where filled with ep90 and as such was changeable and had a drain plug.
Late swivels where filled with one shot grease, no drain plug, so sealed for life kind of thing.
You could change it but would mean striping it down a little.

84 should defo have drain my 93 has.
Can of worms messing with unknown swivels, the cv grease for the newer ones is top notch in the older models as well.

Easiest thing is to look at the drawings / photos in the workshop manual and see the position of the drain in that. The interweb is a wonderful thing but having a workshop manual immediately to hand is better.

Draining the swivels is a normal service procedure, it was only done away with the introduction of 1-shot grease and the removal of the drain.

Ok thanks for all your good advice. Sounds like mine should have a drain as topping it up with EP90. Don't think axles have been changed. It is all original and in standard form.
