Defender font stub axle - needle roller, oil seal & thrust bearing replacement

Hi all... i've just received a replacement stub axle for my defender 90... i got it from paddocks and the buggers told me over the phone that it came WITH the needle roller bearing, oil seal and thrust bearing (it's the later type).
Well, no such luck, it's a bear unit so i'm going to need to either remove the old bits from the old stub axle and transfer them to the new one... or order the extra bits new. Before i start messing around trying to get the old bits out of the stub axle (by the way the ole haynes manual says this job should be entrusted to a LR dealer!), i wondered if anyone has any experience in this area... am i unlikely to get the old bits out intact... particularly the thrust bearing looks pretty tight on there... any tips/techniques?

I'm sure there was a simliar thread the other night and @neilly posted a link to a video. I'll go and look for it for you, meanwhile neilly might get that notification if he's online. :)
 
You should be able to get the seal out as long as it's not too old. I did two recently because I'd fitted the bearings and seals to the wrong type of stub axles (don't ask). I think I used a fairly large tyre lever.

thanks guys.. i managed to get it sorted... it wasnt as hard as i thought.

but he didnt say anything about the thrust bush...

anyway, so what i did was hammer behind the bush on the old stub axel with a chisel:

then i bent a crap old screwdriver with a bit of pipe:020.JPG
which i then used to get in behind the roller bearing, taking care not to damage the seal019.JPG
i then used the weight of the stub axle to free the bearing by banging down on the handle of the screwdriver on the ground and moving the blade of the screwdriver around the circumference of the bearing.
and finally popped the oil seal out using the bendy screwdriver also021.JPG
all parts seem to have survived extraction pretty well so looking forward to fitting them to the new stub axle and getting back on the road (and off!)

only thing i'm wondering is why the new stub axle is covered in yellow sticky crap?! suppose i'd best clean it off before fitting.

glad it wasn't a b**stard of a job this time... makes a change! :)

made a bit of a balls of that last post with pics all over the place... hope it makes sense for anyone in a similar quandry... word to the wise if ordering a new stub axle make sure u get the "kit"rather than just the stub axle... although i noticed that paddocks only seem to do the non-OEM stub axle with the kit. i wanted to go for OEM quality cos i find 20 quid a suspiciously low price for such a critical part!

Sticky stuff stops it rusting in storage.
OEM is the way to go. Good call.
