Defender 90 300tdi strip down and rebuild

you will either to be able to seal if it hasnt or wont if it has with flange on

lr used parts are often cheaper from the internet breaker groups ie breakeryard.com and findapart ,than specialist 4x4 breakers i use them alot but downside is they have less specialist parts knowledge but upside they have breakers all over country that dont allways know true value

Another problem the drop arm from the steering box has oil on it can this be rebuilt or is it a new item?

you can rebuild them but watch needle brgs supporting sector shaft and wear in sector shaft where seal runs

Thanks again James, was not thinking of rebuild myself but farming it out to a company. I know my limits.

Bollox just got my polybush kit delivered thought it would have come with the A frame bushes as well. Back on the phone..

Got home early from work today so decided to do some work on the beast. Disconected all the stearing pipes and the gearbox and enging bolts. Poped down to see the farmer and he said he would pop up later to lift the engine and box out.cut a bit more of the chassis off the back and cannot belive the crud that was inside..

Today has been the turning point old engine out and fitted in the new chassis. Need two new gearbox mountings as they were shot..

Just a pic of the gear box mount. lookes like it has been knackered for a while..

what an interesting thread,ive had my 300 tdi defender 90 for a week,my chassis has a few small holes and my front outriggers are holed, they only appeared after a good jet washing and wire brushing,just wish the previous owner had spent a bit of time protecting the chassis! were did you buy your chassis from?what other parts are you changing? thanks phil

Apart from the chassis i am changing all the bushes, springs, bolts and nuts. The rest of the parts will get the usual rub down and paint

how much was your chassis? and were did you buy it from? my chassis is repairable but i dont think i will be fully hapy till i know its perfect how long have you given to to the chassis swop? thanks phil

Total bill £1587.60 that includs the new gearbox cross member and delivered up to Scotland. All in all i think i will spend approx 6k to put this right but should have a very sorted lanny at the finish.

i need to get saving! what years is yours? mileage etc,mines a 96 300 tdi 90 truck cab done 83000 miles.

Hi it's a 96 300 tdi showing 167.000 but it's not the original engine. It does not smoke or rattle.

Looking for some help with the bulkhead. The top corner on the drivers
side is a bit rusty. Overall it is in good shape and only needs a very small
amount of welding to the footwells. I have bought the repair panel from
yrm although it does not cover the inside if you know what i meen. Is
there a repair panel for the second skin to the interior of the defender or
will this need to be made up. I have put up a photo but the quality is not
very good.

not getting any sex tonight. Just put the hand brake back plate in the dish washer to get it clean lol.
