Hi!

Well basically, my old faithful Citroén Xantia 2.0's head gasket blew and ruined the whole engine, so I need a replacement car!

However I can't decide between the mighty 3.5 V8 Petrol guzzler or the 2.5 S4 Diesel engine...

And to make the decision even more hard, there is a 1989 Land Rover Discovery 200 TDI and a 1993 Land Rover Discovery 3.5 V8 for sale in my local paper and both are open to offers!

Here is the pros and cons list I have got already:

200 TDI PROS:

Economical - More Reliable - Easier To Maintain - Known To Last Over 300,000 Miles.

200 TDI CONS:

Extremely Slow - Turbos Sometimes Go Bad.

3.5 V8 PROS:

Very Powerful - Higher Top Speed - Easier To Start In Winter (important as winter is coming up fast!)

3.5 V8 CONS:

Will Barely Get 20MPG - Requires More Maintainence To Keep Running Well.

So, what should I go for!?

Here are the list of details for the two Landys for sale:

1993 Land Rover Discovery 200 2.5 TDI
112,000 Miles
1 Month MOT
3 Month TAX
Manual Gear Box
Serviced Last Week
4 New Tyres
£995 ONO

1990 Land Rover Discovery 3.5 V8
266,000 Miles
No MOT
8 Month TAX
Automatic Gear Box
Requires Quite A Lot For MOT
£150 ONO

Quite a price difference eh! But what one should I go for!? I can do the work for the MOT myself, and have spoken to the guy and it is mainly tyres and stuff, so nothing like engine mounts or corrosion, but I basically need to know if I should go for the Diesel or the Petrol!

Both of them have a bit of wheel arch rust etc... but structurally they are both 100% fine!

I won't be using the car for off-roading, just driving on roads! So I don't need one that I can convert to a monster truck!

Please reply! Both owners need a quick sale and if I come to a decision tonight I'll get the money out the bank and hopefully buy the one I want tomorrow morning!

So, it is in your hands! Petrol BHP or Diesel Torque!?

Quoting Carroll Shelby - "Horse Power sells the car, Torque wins the race!"

Though in this case I don't think either will win any races!

the first thing i would do is look at the floor boot floor inner wings and sills. from there pick the best one, bloody things rot like hell. oh welcome to lz..

Well after writing the thread, I got bored and gave the TDI owner a ring to say I'd be up in 10 minutes to view and test drive the Landy!

While I was in a car viewing mood I phoned the 3.5 owner also, and arranged the same thing.

First car I went to see was the Diesel!

Green in colour, Original Alloys, 3 near bald tyres, but all-in-all a good car! I met the owner, nice fella, he obviously needed the money, so I saw that as an advantage if I decided to make an offer.

Had a good look inside, outside, and underneath, all rust free and good! Checked under the bonnet. There sat the 2.5 TDI motor, obviously seen a lot of use! It had had fresh oil and oil filter one week ago and not driven since, so I was expecting to be sitting around for hours in the rain and cold waiting for the diesel motor to come to life, how wrong I was! With the exception of a bit of hesitation, (due to worn plugs), the engine fired right up on the first turn of the key!

Gave it a test drive... Steering is not sporty at all, engine is not sporty at all, looks are not sporty at all, gear box is not sporty at all, however all of those were in good working order! Just not sporty at all!

Said I'd be back after I'd seen the other Landy, so I headed off to see it!

3 Doors, White with rusty wheel arches, puddle of coolant sitting on his drive way under the radiator... Didn't look good, but for £150 I can see the attraction!

Met the owner, again, a nice fella, though he didn't need the money, just wanted rid of it as he'd bought a new Jag XK (lucky b******!). Had a look round, a bit of rust on the under body, though not bad enough to fail an MOT (I should know I work as an MOT tester!), all 4 tyres are completely bald, interior however is good. Nice and clean, no rips in the seats, from the inside it looked like it had just rolled out of the factory in '90!

Popped the bonnet, and God I'd forgotten how good one of those V8's looked! However this one was in need of a good clean! The oil is really dirty, and oil is leaking from the O-Ring on the filter, but what can you expect from a poorly maintained 1990 Landy!?

The leak of coolant is only a loose clip holding the bottom radiator hose on, easy changed.

Then came the drive... From the outside it looks like it has been eaten alive by rust, from the engine bay it looks like it has been neglected from day one... From the drivers seat it drives like a BEAST! Steering is much tighter than the TDI and it handles corners better too (even in the rain with bald tyres!), though that is probably something to do with the TDI being a 5 door and the V8 being a 3 door! Still, what a drive!

When I got back to his house I don't know what came over me, but I handed three £50's to him and signed the V5C...

Yep, I bought the ole V8!

So I got back in my Vauxhall Senator and headed off to tell Mike (TDI guy) the bad news... But when I pulled up and saw the ole TDI sitting at the side of the road with no future at all (he said he was thinking of scrapping it if it didn't sell...) I couldn't do it! I offered him £500 - he said £700 - I said £600 and I (again!) signed the V5C and gave him 6 £100's...

Yep, I bought both! Well at least now I am fully equipped for the snowy winter that is ever-approaching!

Both Landys are still outside their former owners houses, but any second now my mate is coming to give me a lift so I can collect them both!

So all together two perfectly good Land Rovers cost me £750... Wow!

When I get the guzzler (3.5) home I'll type out the MOT failures, but for now... YAAAAAAY!! I OWN TWO LAND ROVERS! :) :D

I'll post pictures of the Landys in a few days once I get the 3.5 MOT'd and clean them both as their pretty filthy!

Oh I forgot! I was meant to type out the MOT failures!

Reasons For Refusal Of MOT Certificate:

N/S brake lamp defective
O/S Front Tyre below 1.6mm
N/S Front Tyre below 1.6mm
O/S Rear Tyre below 1.6mm
N/S Rear Tyre below 1.6mm
N/S Front suspension bush perished

Advisories:

Slight oil leak from Oil Filter
Slight coolant leak from bottom radiator hose

Not bad eh ?

I'm going to pick up 4 new wheels now to bolt on. And when I'm changing the wheels I might as well change that suspension bush. Then all that is left is the blown brake lamp and when that is changed I can MOT The Guzzler!
