Due to have a (small)windfall after saving my ass off and i'll have approx 10k to spend, and i keep looking at the above 3 choices. It would need to be the family bus, a daily commuter/ load lugger and capable of 1000 mile weekends when required. I don't mind preventative maintenance but i don't want to get stranded as this would be our only car, with a motorbike as back up/ commuting duties when i don't have to use my car as a van. I don't really want to spend more than £300 quid a year on tax so would be looking at pre-2006 for the rr/d3.

Or realistically am i just asking for trouble in this price range with these choices? Have been searching but too much conflicting info. I.e L322 better than the disco because its not body off for some jobs vs L322 is a money pit and unreliable (i blame data for that opinion!).

Better off with a late model P38 diesel. Just look at Saint V8's posts about his L322. Also research the electric handbrake on the D3.
Personally I would go for the D3 over the L322 anytime, much more practical.

I'd love the p38- but I've read a lot of horrors about them too and wondering with age factored in am i asking for trouble? Or do i spend half on a decent p38, keep the rest aside as a contingency fund for repairs or a daily runner?

That would be my choice. My late 2000 DHSE has never let me down in 5 years although it has needed a fair bit of TLC. Cheap an easy to fix, personally I wouldn't touch the V8.
Total outlay over 5 years about £1K if you include the SS exhaust, plus normal service items of oil & filters. Quiet, comfortable & economical, the last true Range Rover.:D

1k over 5 years? My ford puma cost me that in 2 years with one thing or another..... admittedly a lot of it welding, and new belts and a waterpump. Might keep the micra, low mileage but battered, and buy a cheaper rr as a pride and joy toy

well just to add my two penneth, have a freelander 2 (as that is in your list), well happy with it, drives really well, reasonably fuel efficient (when I drive it rather than the wife), had it 2 years now, no major issues

only slight downside is the boot is a little on the small side as the spare is in an internal wheel well, which means high boot floor.

we manage to cope pretty well with getting everything in though.

Freelander 2 is the best of the lot, then D3. L322's can get very expensive. other garages bring them to us all the time, I have one now that need a new steering column ecu £3K as it only comes with the upper column.

+1 on the FL2. I'd have another one.
An all round wallet friendly vehicle.

Load space is the only significant compromise over the other two.
