just short of 400 quid which at the time i thought was a good deal, more fool me eh

My TD5 kept coming up clear on tests for HG failure. I knew it wasn't 100% right but it could behave itself for 1000 miles or so and then overpressurise on a local run. I eventually got fed up with it and decided to change the HG.

I was going to do the HG on my 110 myself but knowing that landrover don't recommend skimming the head on a TD5 I asked the engineering company that were going to skim and test the head how much they'd charge for doing it. The guy agreed to do it for £500 all in. I decided that this was a good idea beacause if it turned out that there was a problem later on then there would be no arguement over blame. As it turned out I made the right decision.

It still wasn't right. It was better but not 100%. I was getting fuel in the coolant and was blowing coolant out every now and again. I took it back to the engineering company where I'd had it fixed and they stripped it back down and told me there was no fault. I told them they were wrong and to re-test the head but to heat it right up this time. I was right. My head had 2 cracks in it. One in the fuel rail and one in the inlet side. This meant I was putting fuel into the coolant and overpressurising the coolant everytime I spooled the turbo up.

Apart from the cost of the replacement head the engineering company had no choice but to sort it out under warranty.

hiya ratty, i know what your saying in your last thread... im totally gutted with my td5 at the min however i do have a couple of ideas blowing through my mind and was wondering if you could help.
is it possible to transplant a 300tdi into my disco td5? i know there is a lot of electronic gismology to get round but i have heard it is poss but i could be wrong. is there a company out there that specialise in this transplant?
alternatively, if was to get hold another td5 engine and do a straight swop, would everything be compatible and fire straight away? or would i need to do something with the becu etc?
thanks alot for any help, jon

I toyed with the idea of putting a 300tdi lump into my 110.

As long as your disco isn't an auto it shouldn't be too much grief.

Another 10p TD5 lump would slot straight in but if you're using the injectors from the new engine you would need to re-program them to your ecu. If you used your original injectors then they need to be put in the correct cylinders to avoid needing re-programing.

I don't know what mods would be required to fit a 15p lump as they have a couple of extra bits and bobs like egr cooler and also the plumbing for the rad is different.

ive seen that the 15p is set up differently to the 10p on the radiator etc but i imagine that can be modified to suite. the egr should'nt be too difficult to sort as the egr removal kit could cure that, it's just the electrics that may cause dramas. i now remember that putting my injectors in another engine will resort in not needing a re-map, ive got the chance of a 15p lump but im really struggling to find the appetite to spend more money on this money pit. my missus is now at her wits end and i can see myself being massively out of pocket one way or the other. im really at the stage of burning the bloody thing out. it's far too good to break too.....

have you got any breakdown cover? If you have AA, RAC or Brittania you can get a repair warranty with them that puts summit like £500 towards getting it fixed. You would have to wait summit like 14 days before your vehicle brokedown though.;):p

nice idea mate but ive had it with the f*$"ing thing, its took too much money... i must be a glutten for punishment but the wife has borrowed some dosh of her dad and weve been out and bought a 4.0l lpg disco 2............. to be honest, im well impressed so far and i hope it stays that way.
