Hi Gang,

My D2 auto has had a slight squeal when first started and is fairly prominant when asked to accelerate, this seemed to go when she was warm.

BUT, this weekend towing my caravan back from Devon developed into just being there all the time when accelerating.

I thought turbo at first as it was if the oil wasnt getting to it when first started, but i have no smoke.

A local inde garage has said ite the manifold gasket, common problem as something warps, it will need reskimming and jobs a goodun??

Its an easy job £150 to do as long as all the bolts come off if any snap then its a head off job...is this correct??

Any thoughts would be welcome, anyone had this or know if this common fault?

Cheers

Oh, would this affect running cost fuel economy?

If manifold you might need new or 2nd hand manifold. One or more studs might be loose, sometimes need helicoil to fix the thread in the head. However the viscous fan bearing can be shot or (if you have) the clutch bearing of the air conditioning compressor. If the bearing locks-up (does not turn) the belt will squeek. You can try to put the airco in ECON mode to rule out the compressor bearing.

Nice one Dutchie! I do think its manifold and not bely trouble though as noise comes from turbo area.

Cheers though for your thoughts

Matt, if like your inde say's and it is the exhaust manifold take it off and get it skimmed and put it back on.
This problem is quite common on TD5's that have been chipped as the exhaust gases can be hotter especially when towing and warp the manifold, I heard some saying that the manifold isn't stressed enough before fitting.

Only problem is the bolts snapping in the head.

Thanks for the reply, but surely i will get the problem again as she is chipped and gasess will continue to be hotter than normal, i do tow but only 4 or 5 times a year, is there stronger manifold out there or is this the first down side of chipping that i have read?

Cheers again

OMG !! £325 plus vat, thanks for the reply but thats a bit steep for me.

If your exhaust manifold has warped it will need a skim to get it flat. Then when refitting replace all the manifold studs with new better quality items and considor the stud and spacer arrangement from JE Engineering.

This whole argument about chipped cars and warped manifolds is a bit of an exageration in my view, as there are a number of reports of non-chipped vehicles suffering the same problem.

What some people recommend is cutting the webs between the ports which allows (apparently) the manifold heat up and cool down (and therefore move slightly) without breaking studs.

You shouldn't have any more problems once it's warped and been skimmed, the heat that your manifold has had already will be the most it's going to get (unless you fit propane) and so won't warp any more than it has already.

From what I've read and heard once it's been done there's been no problems since, I'm just waiting for this to happpen to mine sometime when towing the Champ.

Thanks all for the input, im in Cov so i will look at what JE can offer as i think they are Coventry based, maybe my inde garage knows of them as I dont fancy doing this myself as i have too many bent knives as it is, not so good arond the spanners you see.

Thanks all

Sorry for hijacking, I've got a squealing noise, but when I take aircon OUT of ECON it stops.....only seems to be noisy when i go through fords / deep puddles or when raining / damp. Just the belt then? Any ideas?

Cheers.

It might be the air compressor belt or it might the compressor clutch.

Whilst you watch the compressor with the engine running, get someone to turn the Econ switch on and off.

Woooahhh!

Save your money. Get your warped one off have it skimmed and put back on. It can only warp once.

BG Landrovers - Monmouth do a swap service for not a lot of dough and it sorted mine. never had a problem since.

My suggestion only costs a penny ... so it is worth trying FIRST.

Take the belt OFF, and start the engine.

If it doesn't squeal, fit the penny!

CharlesY

PS - don't forget to fit the belt back on!

penny trick only works on 300tdi not td5

OOOPs!

While the engine is running, spray the back flat surface of the belt with a silicone spray.

If you don't have that, use a short skoosh of WD40

If a quick squirt of Mr Sheen or WD40 shuts it up you will know where the problem lies.

Cheers all squealing has gone and so have my savings, JE engineering changed my warped manifold for a recon skimmed one, cost £395 plus vat

But boy did they have some smart landies knocking about the place, have alook at their site....

Welcome to JE Engineering | About Us

Wife says the Landie has to go as its just costing costing costing, dunno what its worth,

2001, TD5 auto, 105k miles, remapped, air springs a year old, new head two yrs ago, new tyres 8000 miles ago, all the bells and whistels in good nik with all the electickery you can imagine.......gona miss her me thinks

I will start the bidding at £2,000 ...

should have gone to BG. £150 nicker sorted my sqealing manifold. That was easy compared to all the other issues...............don not buy d2 td5 unless you love frustration.
