Cylinder head cleaning??

I have been lucky enough to obtain a nice low mileage second hand cylinder head for my 1974 88 Land Rover. It has been stored for a while so has some slight surface rust. Is there anything I can use to clean it up myself? I know a machine shop would do this, but I like to do things myself If I can. Its all part of this hobby

Dont use scotchbrite pads. They have a sand like substance in them.
